win 7 probs with dedcon and installing bmp files

Postby Forever Young » Tue Feb 21, 2012 11:51 am

i use win 7.
1. if i am watching a record till the end(till game over) the dedcon programm crashes always. in the past that never happened.
2. if i watch a record without internet connection it seems all fine till game time around 40 mins it is like the game stopped or freeze around 10 seconds and after that it is running for 2-3 seconds normal, then the stopping thing again and so on. i also tried to use that info out of this thread. "/set AdvertiseOnInternet 0" without success!

3. a nice player gave me his own created bmp files and i tried to delete the normal files to copy the new files into the right folder. i opened the main dat, to do this but it seems something is not compatible or i have write rights problems again.
i really want to delete my hole cpu but i can not do this because i have not the win 7 cd at my new home. also my internet connection is to low to download all things which needed. this will need 2 weeks.

I'm just about to use a hammer for my computer
anyone has ideas?

That's a bug with dedcon; on playback, it crashes when clients send scores. You either need to update dedcon or downgrade the version of defcon you use for watching.

Could be that dedcon just assumes you're a dirty pirate if it can't connect to the metaserver. I wanted to look into this some time ago already.

The usual procedure is:
rename main.dat to main.rar
unrar it so it creates a data/ folder (not a main/data folder)
replace files as you please, don't rar it up again (defcon is picky)

Alright, I reinstalled Windows 7 64 (professional) a while back and ever since then I had issues with Dedcon. I actually fixed them all today. I am using Defcon 1.6 (non-steam) and Dedcon 1.6.0_svn1038.win32

Key words: Dedcon Windows 7 64 crash Defcon recording advertiseoninternet

No more dedcon crash at end of game.
No more non-advertised playbacks (it actually shows up in the metaserver list).
No more recordings listed as 'playback', instead it will show up as '1v1 sfcon random' or appropriate name.
No more demo key used.

What did I do to fix these issues? I really have no idea, however, I'll give you what I did anyway:

1. Dedcon kept looking for my steam key instead of my real one, so I removed Steam Defcon (not steam itself), then browsed to where it was looking for the key and put my real one there. It still checks the steam folder, but works, so I don't care.

2. Using the Registry Editor, followed bert's instructions and modified the value for

Code: Select all

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Dedcon.Recording\shell\open\command

to

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Dedcon\dedcon.exe" -l "%1" -c "AdvertiseOnInternet 1"

3. Made sure Dedcon.exe had correct permissions (right click Dedcon, Properties, Security, Edit [Users (xx\Users)], click full control.

I was getting "ReadException" errors before (Steam key related??), no everything works like it did when Dedcon first became stable oh so long ago.

Enjoy

Edit: Forgot to mention, no matter how I edit the authkey file for Dedcon, it never ever ever sees the key, always reverts to demo (on my other machine/laptop)
