Defcon runs on Windows 7 with 1-5 fps

Postby MRFRoST » Tue Jun 29, 2010 12:53 pm

Hello,

I try running Defcon on Windows 7 64bit but its very slow (1-5 fps). I already updated the Video Card drivers to 10.6 (from 6/16/2010) and I also installed the newest directx update.

My hardware:

Core 2 Duo 6700
4GB RAM
Ati Radeon 4870 X2
Asus Xonar D2X
Windows 7 x64 with newest updates

That still looks like a video driver related problem with OpenGL support. Quick diagnostics and shameless plug: download this little game and check whether it runs with full textures on walls and floor (it automatically switches to textureless mode if OpenGL is not properly accelerated).

The game works fine, but the floor is black with a white grid. Is there a bug in the newest ATI driver?

Could be. The one you have certainly doesn't have OpenGL acceleration. Where did you get it from? Microsoft is kind of known for distributing drivers over Windows update without OpenGL. Get yours directly from ATI/AMD, here if I'm not horribly mistaken.

I downloaded the driver direct from http://www.ati.com

Hmm, here's where I have to pass this on to ATI experts. Is there anything special one needs to do to get OpenGL on 64 bit Windows?

Today I found a solution. If I switch "Wait for vertical Refresh" to "Always Off", then the framerate looks OK.

Thanks to "bert_the_turtle" for your help.
