As I was walking to class this morning I was thinking about my standard silo setup (I had just looked at the forums and my avatar reminded me of it), and it occurred to me that I really had no idea whether or not the radar in the middle actually did much good, and that maybe I should stick an airbase in there instead.
I thus decided that I was going to find out, and so I took a couple screen shots, merged them (I nuked the radar after the first screen shot so that I only had silos providing radar for the second), then ran the numbers (due to the less than circular shape of the inner radar coverage I estimated things a bit for it). I'm having trouble with my connection right now, it isn't wanting to upload files to the internet so I'll post the image once I get a chance, probably tomorrow sometime.
According to my calculations the radar in the middle produces an added 96% of radar coverage to the setup. This number may actually be a bit low do to how I rounded the numbers for the inner area, but is still a substantial amount. Below are the numbers if you wish to improve/critique/laugh at my math.
Units: Inches
Outer Ring: 7 inches diameter
Inner Coverage: 5 inches diameter (I decided that I would figure the area as a circle rather then figure out it's actual internal area)
Total Area= 38.48 inches squared
Inner Area= 19.63 inches squared
Area Added by Radar= 18.85 inches squared
%=(18.85/19.63)=.9602=96%
I have decided that I'll keep that radar in there, it seems to do some good!

Mmm, I always wondered at the effectiveness of that... does make some difference, but is really only useful as a final fallback - it doesn't go anywhere near covering the silos's AA range. I usually brick my silos as close as possibly, but when I leave a hole it's usually for an airbase. Radars go on the outside if you ask me - still as close as possible, but on the outside.

Doing what? Most of the time you'll have 2-3 scout radars, and the rest are always best positioned to give radar coverage for your silos - there really is no better cause.

My style of play is to protect my military assets first, while attacking their military targets first, so defending my silos is paramount. Keep in mind that in addition to this setup I would have all of my airfields and most of my otehr radars adding to the setup, with a couple along the border just in case the person put their units close.
