remind me what the meaning of life is?

Postby GreenRock » Wed Oct 28, 2009 3:39 am

thinking philosophically for a day is all.

im also wondering what drives everyone to get up in the morning?
why we, as humans, pursue our drives only to find in a few decades we ultimatley meet our demise?
what the hell do atheists look forward to?

Persuing the meaning of life is pointless if you have yet to separate it in your mind from the worth of life.

Speaking as an atheists, we generally just try to enjoy life while it lasts. Part of that is to make it enjoyable for others as well. Also we tend not to worry about what will happen to us (personally) in the distant future.

Well, that applies to me anyway

I'm sorry to say, I pitty the point of view of an Atheist. It's a sad existence. But one day you'll see the truth.
Maybe you could look forward to that!

You live in a little box. We feel sorry for you. You look to the heavens for guidance, when god is inside us all. It's what bonds us, as humans. Religion or not, it's always there.

Corinthians 2 wrote:These people are false apostles. They have fooled you by disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. But no wonder, for even Satan masquerades as an angel of light. So it is no wonder his servants can also do it by pretending to be godly ministers. In the end they will get every bit of punishment their wicked deeds deserve.

I've seen some interesting debates about this. Since it appears a rather significant amount of people would prefer to spend an eternity in Hell than simply ceasing to exist.

Well speaking as an atheist (but not for all atheists) here is my view on the meaning of life:

1. Nothing has a "meaning" as in higher purpose, but they things follow a set of physical laws (many unkown, to complex to describe).

2. Life is a natural phenomenon arriving from these physical principles which is so amazingly phenomenally complex we are highly unlikely to be able to describe it.

3. "Life" as in the perception of consciousness, in particular relating to humans is just another complex set of physical reactions which manifests itself as our senses and thoughts and brain processes.

4. I like feeling happy/interested/knowledgeable, I dislike pain/ignorance/hatred and from what I read of other people this seems fairly universal to humans.

5. As a result of the above, the meaning of life is to increase the "good" things listed and decrease the "bad" things list in both my life, and others.

6. Help/think of others since they have same levels of consciousness/emotions etc. And more "selfish"ly people working together benefits me as well.

Basically the meaning of life to me is "do good things", despite how general that sounds.

Oh and in addition to the above rules

7. Temporary happiness is not an excuse for delusion or causing the misery of others.

Oh and.

8. If someone's not seriously negatively affecting you/themself/ someone else then let them do what they want. "Your rights end where mine begins" and vice versa.

Life has a meaning, the meaning is to die. You life to die and when you die you die to life again. God exsists so he also doesn't exsists. Because the meaning of God exsistence is to not exsist any more, and when he doesn't exsists anymore the meaning is to exsist again. Can these two things be at the same time? Yes.

But what is once seperated, into exsistence and non-exsistence, was once one.

Without an authority, who can tell you the meaning of life, you rely on yourself.
I found the 4 cardinal virtues very helpful, to make meaningful decisions, even without knowing the meaning of life.
# Wisdom
# Courage
# Moderation
# Justice

But i dont need them to stand up in the morning, at least not every day.
