Defcon Bots!

Postby Mark » Wed Nov 19, 2008 11:38 am

Over the last couple of years I've been doing quite a bit of work with Imperial College looking at DEFCON to see if it is possible to build the perfect Artificial Intelligence bot to destroy the world. We teamed up with Dr Simon Colton and Robin Baumgarten who used a variety of machine learning techniques to build a bot that consistently beat the original Introversion AI. Although we were delighted with this success it got us thinking, is it possible to create an unbeatable bot? Is it possible to make a bot that is more fun then the IV bot rather than simply destroying the player every time? To answer that question we have decided to enlist the help of academics, students and accomplished programmers around the world. From today you will be able to download an API for DEFCON that will allow you to directly control the behavior of an AI bot and play it against real players and eventually against other AI bots.

We think this is a great opportunity for students interested in game design to use DEFCON as a platform to extend their programming skills and conduct valid research into the ever expanding field of Artificial Intelligence. As a great additional incentive, Imperial College plans to hold a DEFCON competition at the 2009 IEEE Symposium on Computational Intelligence and Games, where the most aggressive AI bots will be pitched against each other in an epic thermonuclear battle! To learn more about this project and to get involved, just visit the project page here. Good Luck!

where the most aggressive AI bots will be pitched against each other in an epic thermonuclear battle!

Surely that's a competition that nobody can win :)

Isn't there some way to make it play itself?

World population - Number of people who enter = number of winners ;)

Please let me know if you have any suggestions concerning the API or if you find bugs. I'll fix them as quick as possible and provide hot-fix builds on my project page.

All other information is available there as well, including documentation and bots. For now, only the Windows version of DEFCON supports bots. Bots can be developed using Visual Studio 2008 (there's a free express version of that available). Over the next weeks, the original AI from DEFCON will be released as a bot (including source code), as well as frameworks to use other programming languages such as Java, Python, and LUA.

Enjoy! 8)

Whoohoo!

Let's see if a bot can execute The Star perfectly. Teehee.

Nice! I'll mention it to the AI teachers at uni when I get the chance.
It can probably make for some very interesting projects. :D
