Darwinia BETA phase 1 continues

Postby Chris » Thu Oct 28, 2004 12:16 am

It's been another busy day for us...we've selected another 200 testers to join the beta phase, and put out new versions for Win32 and (gasp!) Macintosh OS X.

100 new testers have been added to the Win32 test group, and 100 new testers have been registered for the Mac test, bringing the total number of testers to 300. We've sent out emails to all those people who have been selected, so congratulations if you got one, and we hope you enjoy the game.

For the Mac testers, we have a forum called "Mac Specific Bugs" for you to post any problems that appear to be related to OS X, or your drivers or your hardware. Otherwise just post your bugs in the normal Class A / class B / class C forums.

Instructions on how to download the beta are here.
Instructions on how to report bugs are here.

We very much hope you enjoy the beta demo.

How exciting! I must check my e-mail. I hope you won't disappoint me, IV, because I might slit my wrists if I don't see a confirmation in my inbox.

Its a beta, kids. Even joking about it is a wee bit silly. Oh well, maybe IV will choose some more in the future, I got nothing backing this up but I like to try to support people...s**t - didn't mean to say that out loud!

Heh. To all you Mac user out there that didn't get in, blame this guy:

apple_ChrisD
apple_ChrisN
apple_DamianR
apple_JenniferC
apple_RichH
apple_ToddP

These "different" users all registered on the same date (26 Oct 2004) and all got in the beta. Only one of them ever made a post. This was two days ago. They ALL got in, while being the only people named apple_* in the forums.

Rather interesting, no? :(

Errr, uh... maybe because their name starts with A?

If so, the names were chosen alphabeticly....

i think IV should investigate the apple_* usernames for ip addresses and so forth. If they are all in the beta and all of them are one person the mac OSX beta is unjust and unfair and more people should be added. I speak as a windows/linux user :D

No, no more people should be added. Consider that the more people test the beta, the chance of buying a game is smaller. Although people have declared to buy the game no matter what, it will be only a single copy, maybe five or seven. Beside, this isn't a game big enough to require a 1000 testers. If IV had 30 people and produced a game just as large, then sure....

...one man will finish it in a week

two men will finish it in 3 days

ten men will finish it in a month

a hundret men will finish it in 5 years

five hundret won't ever finish it.

Os something like that. You get the logic.

Those people all work for Apple and are involved with the publishing side of the Mac version of Darwinia. Amoungst the 300 testers there are several people who work on the publishing / development side keeping an eye on things - it's quite normal.

This time round selection was random - we simply picked 100 people randomly from the mac applicants, and 100 people randomly from the win32 applicants. Sorry if you didn't get in, but we now have nearly 3000 applicants, and we just can't handle / don't need that many testers.

You don't need to rub it in.

Anyway, is anyone else here for more then a year not in the beta now? (Besides Ozymandias)

I'm just wondering.
