Anatomy of a backstab gone wrong

Postby roflamingo » Mon Feb 26, 2007 3:23 pm

I wish I had more screenshots but I will attempt to describe:

5 players [NA/SA/EU/RU/Asia (me)] -- 5 is gross, I know, but it's hard to find players at 5am.

-- Europe wants me in an alliance with Russia to go 3 on 2 against NA/SA. I apply to them and 1 turns me down (something funny already afoot).
-- Europe then joins me and Russia comes in too
-- I place the bulk of my fleet in the Pacific to defend against NA/SA, with some in the Indian for SA
-- 2 subs for SF/LA, 2 subs for Mexico/Lima, 2 to go through Bering to sit on top of the Yukon for SF/LA, 2 in the Indian to go for Sao Paulo, and 4 to sit in the pocket of the Indian in case Russia does something silly.
-- Russia puts ALL of his fleet in the Pacific. He sent it forward, encountered some ships, then sent it all back to sit right below Kamchatka. He tells me "don't panic" (LOL)
-- Europe ends up fighting nearly all of NA's and SA's fleets in the Atlantic as he was the only one with ships there. He did a great job and made it to the outskirts of Labrador.
-- As this is happening, i fire from my subs at SF/LA with no AA fire at all. I decide to stop after spending 8/10 nukes and try the last 2 at Mexico
-- I hit Mexico with 1 nuke with some AA fire, and Lima 3 times
-- 3 carriers/6 bombers I sent to Santiago almost all hit

So by then I have a big lead in points. Some ICBMs hit Tokyo/Seoul/Pusan but I'm not defending those anyways. All my gear is further southwest near Hong Kong.

So I decide to fire 2 full silos worth at New York/Washington/Sao Paulo. It was truly astounding to see NA raise all his silos and to hit NY/DC before Europe with 16 nukes. The nukes heading for Sao Paulo all hit due to interesting silo placement. In fact, SA had a silo right on Sao Paulo which he raised just as the nukes were coming in, which destroyed the city and the silo.

So I'm thinking my good fortune is not going to last. However, EU kept pounding at NA's silos, and Russia had sent his entire fleet back to nuke the basically empty US mid-west and Mexico with 12 subs and all his carrier bombers.

I'm up to over 200 points by now. The only action I had seen were the ICBM's that hit Japan and Korea, and some NA/SA subs that had emerged to fire off Hong Kong and Japan. I mean right beside the shores. Those died so fast from insta-battleship fire that I didn't know it had happened until I saw the white puffs in the ocean.

By now I can see the writing on the wall. Everything good has been capped and NA/SA are dead. I had already diverted the 2 subs from the Yukon to over top the 4 unprotected Russian airbases in east-central siberia.

Then the speed goes to 1x. Suddenly, all of Russia's and Europe's silos flip into ICBM mode and the nukes trickle in my direction. I gave it about 30 seconds to figure out the trajectory and decided it was me they wanted. All of Russia's silos were near Moscow.

I quickly aimed my 30 bombers on bases and carriers towards the eastern part of western Russia (lol), my 2 subs in the Arctic at the 4 airbases, and my 4 Indian subs at Moscow and vicinity. I decided to leave the alliance right away in case there were bombers already coming.

Some idiot says in broken english "very poor ROFL" and I say "huh?". I guess some people go through this game with their pants down all the time. I figure it's better to pig out while the slop is handy. I then say "it looks like eu/ru are betraying me" to which Polaris (EU) slyly replies:

"We're just renting your airspace". 8) Yaokuguy.

A few minutes later, Asia is almost completely smoked by about 100 silo nukes and 20+ bombers (silos and all). I took out all 4 airbases and every Russian city I could hit (I think all but Leningrad). I had to leave Europe alone (next time I'm bringing 2 subs into the Atlantic for London). I'm still not sure how I took 7.5M in collateral. Perhaps I didn't leave the EU-RU-Asia alliance quick enough, or maybe it was from hitting SA again after allying with him at the end (something silly to do.)

The best part (the chat you can see in this screenie) is Europe chastizing me for not helping him in the Atlantic. I'm still scratching my head about the geography involved. He didn't seem to criticize Russia though, who put all 36 ships in the Pacific and none in the Arctic/Atlantic north of Moscow.

Note: I don't always prepare for a backstab, or plan one. But that alliance thing in the first minute of Defcon 5 made me think this game would be silly.

I learned real quick what a mistake it is to place silos directly over cities. Early on I thought it was a great way to provide the most effective protection.

You could have put a CPU in there for a sixth  .

I saw what you had here before. :P It was better that way.

Where's the caranthir.pkk guide to destroying the enemy? Or did you take up another game? I've been looking at Supreme Commander. Is it fun?

There's gonna be a guide?

I've seen the links to advanced tactics here and there but never read any of it. Unless it's brief and to the point or I'm really, really, really interested, I don't read it.

Don't worry, I'd be interested in a caranthir.pkk guide just based on the couple of games I've been in with you. "Know thy enemy..."

In other news, when should I look forward to seeing you on the servers? I've been waiting for a chance to redeem myself.

I've thought many times about writing a guide. The trouble is that in order to be exhaustive it would take about 20 pages and pictures, and no one would ever read it.

But you didn't answer the real question...
