I don't know if this will work for you on Ubuntu, but I have the Uplink demo running on Fedora Core 3 using the Mandrake patch and a front-end script.
Put libglut.so.3.7 and this script in your uplink directory:
#!/bin/sh
here=$(dirname $0)
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$here:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
export LD_PRELOAD=libglut.so.3.7
exec $here/uplink $*
Run the script instead of the uplink binary directly.

odd though that the game was unable to 'find' libglut in /usr/lib.any idea why not ?
cheers

hi...
I don't have libglut.so.3.7 I only have libglu.3.8
altho I tried just change the script line to libglut.so.3.8.0 and to libglut.so.3 after I copied them to the same dir, but it gives the same output:
[/code]Portatil:/home/cusco/Desktop/uplink# ./lol
./uplink: relocation error: ./uplink: undefined symbol: __glutRoot
I don't have libglut.so.3.7 I only have libglu.3.8
Code: Select all
Portatil:/home/cusco/Desktop/uplink# locate libglut.so
/usr/lib/libglut.so.3
/usr/lib/libglut.so.3.8.0altho I tried just change the script line to libglut.so.3.8.0 and to libglut.so.3 after I copied them to the same dir, but it gives the same output:

Im using Debian sarge with kernel 2.6
what should I do?
thanks in advancejust thought i'd give a hand... it seems too easy to work, but i'm running xandros linux, just installed, still tweaking and updating and nonsence, but i wanted a game to play while i waited, so i dusted off my cd only to find this error you guys are experiencing... Xandros i am pretty sure is a base-off of debian, and so this should help you all...
Just tar -xvzf the linuxpatch file that came on the cd for the full game, i'm not sure about the demo myself, but there's probably a download on the site for it. the patch fixed it right up, here i was ignoring it the whole time i tried messing with the libglut <.< ...
well peace out,

still not great
Hi Guys (and gals)
I'm trying to get Uplink (great game, keep it up) running on my linux desktop (kubuntu 6.0.6). I've had the same libglut issues as everyone else it seems.
I patched it as advised by dnitemare, problems gone, but now when I run the uplink script I just get dumped back to the command line instantly, as if nothing happened.
Has anyone else had this problem? and more importantly can anyone else provide a solution?
Waity

Same here - Ubuntu 7.10
Hi folks,
got my CD after years and got the same results on Linux, no libglut found, even after applying the patch.

Install the latest version and please a start a new thread. Uplink use SDL now, GLUT errors are certainly not your problem.
