[Suggestion] Boilers and heating

Postby paktsardines » Mon Oct 08, 2012 4:34 am

Kind of self explanatory, but some initial thoughts:

1. A big, power-hungry, boiler/furnace item would be cool. It would operate a lot like the pumping station, but provide hot water.
2. Cells and rooms can have heaters to boost comfort, which have to be connected to hot water pipes.
3. Showers boost comfort when they're connected to hot water.
4. If hot water costs money (electricity bill?) it'll be a good incentive not to run toilets on hot water.
5. Maybe individual room temperatures across the prison?

Pump -> Boiler room -> Pipes -> Hot Showers.

I quite like the idea, don't see the problem with one little addition to the utilities at all.

Love this.

Would be cool if you had to hire a plumber first to unlock the boiler. The plumber could also go around fixing water leaks in pipes.

Conversely you could have an electrician who fixes sparks from electrical items. If a sparking electrical unit meets a leaky water pipe you could end up bringing down the system / blowing up the electrical device / killing nearby prisoners and staff.

I like the idea of leaky pipes affecting electricy (and vice-versa). It would really make you think about how to best layout your water and electricity.

This would be really cool to see in the game. Right now along side my Grants Mod I am trying to work out the best way to add items into the game, so it might take awhile however I might be able to put a draft togther on my game on what it might look like. If I like it (I do right now) I think that it would be a great addition to the game and if it has not been released in a future update, I will release it in a future mod that I will make.

Boiler Poll

Postby koppamale » Mon Oct 08, 2012 3:28 pm

I'm not in favor of a boiler addition. I don't think there'd be enough gameplay value to make the added complexity worthwhile.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against complexity. But the added gameplay doesn't seem to have enough reward for the level of complexity suggested. Yay, my prison has hot water. Maybe while we're at it we can divie up the power grid into direct and alternating current.

Yeah, I do know what you mean, But have you ever seen a prison breakout movie without a boiler/furnace room? :)
Maybe if there were more uses for them than just hot water.

I'm loving the idea of having hot water as well as the plumber and electrician additions. I'd love to see the water losing temperature as it goes further down the pipe (turning from red to blue as it gets colder), with it getting colder a lot quicker if you have it going too far through the 'outside'. The heat could then get passed around through the prison to keep prisoners content for longer than if they were cold and thinking of home.

It adds a higher level of complexity, making you really think about how you lay out your prison. Keeping the boiler close to both the cells and the shower in order to benefit from the heat, whilst also keeping the overheads in mind - only having hot showers at certain times of the day and heating at night, for example.

Brilliant - temperature drop-off is to water as voltage drop-off is to electricity (see:http://forums.introversion.co.uk/prisonarchitect/viewtopic.php?t=706). It adds more gameplay and depth to the hot water/boiler stuff, perfect.[/url]

I like the idea, if it can be kept simple!

I'm with the the two fellas above this. I love complexity, but only if it somehow, even temotely, affects the main gameplay, the further from, the simpler i like it to be.

I can imagine some type of inmate that you need to treat better than others, like people that come in for a short while before seeing a jury (IANAL, but you know what i mean, right?) for safekeeping.

Maybe if the person gets sick or beaten up, you have failed to protect him,
and thus lose some money. Supplying certain areas with warm water could prevent sickness in those areas.
Warm water could both increase the hygiene as well as the quality of food produced in the kitchen,
And it would probably boost the effectiveness of medicinal rooms.

Theme Hospital like radiators? Yes maybe. Will a bitter sarcastic receptionist announce boiler failures/over-heating?

We totally need the tanoy from Theme Hospital. Best part of that game. Especially when she flips her lid when an earthquake hits :P
