Right.. Me and my friend have Steam version. 1.2.3. His friend has the one from the site. (demo + authkey = full game). 1.2.0. Wtf?
Since he's my friend's friend, I don't really have a direct way of talking to him atm, but I'll tr to get to that. However I don't think we will be able to reach an answer to the question: why doesn't it auto-update and why can't he join us?
Version differences?

Redownload the demo. There is a file in your game directory that says "authkey" and open it with a notepad, it will have your key for you so you don't have to buy another one. But if there isn't one, email one of the staff and they'll send another one for you. You should be fully upgraded then.

well I asked him to send it to me anyway, then the answer became quite obvious. Still, for some reason I have no idea what, he refuses to try and fix it, since he "already got his update" (which he downloaded off of RapidShare, and is 1.2.3).RabidZombie wrote:NeatNit, that's odd. I would ask you to send us his autopatch_debug, to see what was going on, but I suspect it may already be too late, since he's run it successfully.

Hmmm. The application directory isn't writable, but he apparently isn't running Vista.
Either he's running it in compatibility mode or the updater can't write to directories like C:\îùç÷éí\Multiwinia.
Right. I'm off to test this.
Edit: Nope.
Seems to work fine. The directory must be write protected.
