The new 2.0 zoom feature is a nightmare

I'm not sure what compelled the developers to add this replacement to the original.

Zooming in or out is now mouse-pointer specific.
In all fairness - I could see this feature being adaptable, even useful - for zoom-in.
But zoom-out?
Whenever your mouse is not centered directly in the middle of the screen, zooming out pushes the view into awkward corners.
I cannot imagine how or why this would be useful?

This is unbearably awkward for me and I actually hate it.

Does anybody know if this feature can be disabled, to allow for the proper original zoom?

It is, and it's located where it obviously should be: Main Menu > Options > Game, there "Zoom to mouse".
