[Suggestion] Beyond Scared Straight in Prison Architect?

Postby ronnie4444 » Wed Jun 03, 2015 9:46 pm

Heyya. This is an idea I've had for a little bit now, but I've only just figured out how some of the basics would work, should it actually be implemented.

I genuinely believe that Prison Architect is fantastic, and I've been thinking about how a system similar to the "Scared Straight" program (you can see it on the show "Beyond Scared Straight") for the game.

So, there would be a few requirements before you can do this "program" (I'll using the word "program" for the scared straight Prison Architect thing, by the way). First off, your prison would have to be over a certain size (What's the point of having a Beyond Scared Straight program if your facility only has 8 prisoners?), perhaps 50+ prisoners. Secondly, you can't do this program until 3 (or so) in-game days after the completion of the last Scared Straight program. Third of all, you will only be allowed to use the program 3 in-game days after the last VIOLENT incident (no, your guards finding a pill in someone's toilet doesn't count), and something like 7 in-game days after the last riot/fire/whatever. Because, well, they wouldn't bring you on a jail tour if there was a big riot yesterday, would they?

Now, once you've met all of these requirements, you can utilize the program. So, at the beginning of the next day, instead of getting a batch of regular prisoners, you get a group of little guys who are in regular clothes. You would obviously get maybe $10,000 when the little guys arrive, for a little motivation. Now, you have to make sure that none of them get injured, and that none of them get into any trouble. If someone gets hurt (for instance, jimbillybob is shanked in the shower), then you are not allowed to utilize this program thing for 7 in-game days. The little guys are immediately driven off, and you are fined $25,000. Now, the little guys are treated like regular prisoners for the first bit, meaning they go to the intake room, they are searched, and they put on yellow jumpsuits (This is just so they stand out. Also, I'm pretty sure that 13 - 16 year old kids would be in protective custody, considering the fact that regular criminals will probably attack them). Now, these little guys will tour the prison (on a path that you can set up), and they will have a "intimidation" meter. Basically, if the cells they see all have TVs, computers and wooden floorboards, then they'll take it as a joke. If they see concrete floors, 2x3 (or, better yet, 2x2) cells, jail doors (instead of regular doors), generally crappy conditions, and a bunch of supermax nasty guys, then they'll sh*t their pants in fear.

They'll stay in cells that you choose (basically, you pick a cell block for them, and they go there) for the night, and the next day, they'll follow the regime until perhaps 5:00. Then, they'll go to the visitation room, meet up with their family (whoever that would be), and they leave. You get a big lump of cash, the amount depending on their intimidation. This amount could be something like $30,000 if your little guys are crapping their pants, and nothing if they see it as a joke. Finally, when they leave, you'll get a little report that shows some stats and stuff (things like how intimidated they were, how many of them smartened up, and what they thought of the "tour"), and for every little guy that cleans up his act, you'll get $2,500. For every one that DOES
re-offend, you'll get 2 points towards the re-offending failure, and you'll get a little fine.

So, what do you think? I personally think it would add that much more to the game, and that Prison Architect would be that much cooler with some programs that are adapted from real life systems.

Cheers!

The rewards are a little high compared to the penalty, but good idea.

I'd support it, reduce the penalty fine, and the grant, and put the "guests" in green jumpsuits so they can REALLY stand out.

I would think injury would be worth a full fine +5000 dollar penalty of the grant, and if someone actually gets killed, you are put onto the failure state for any further deaths in the prison, since the media would point out how unsafe your prison is.

Oh, and if they witness a violent act, that's not directed at them, put down by the guards, then it should be worth a lot towards the intimidation factor.

add in an option to make sure all kids are always escorted by guards to ensure their safety(and intimidate them with shotguns and guarddogs) ,

You've obviously never seen children visiting during a riot...

Anyone who wants their game "sanitised" should go and see what became of The Sims under the new politically correct management structure.

Depends on context. But yes I disagree with her, and wanted to disparage her with nebulous language.

Not really. "Political correctness" is one of those phrases like "right-wing" or "liberal" that is used to disparage and dismiss others without actually addressing the content of their comments. It is fine to not want a "sanitized" version of the game (though I don't see how the game is "sanitized" in any way if no scared-straight program is introduced), but to back up your point of view with the "political correctness" canard underscores the lack of a cogent argument. It's pointless polemics.

Oh. Well I am sorry, I thought it was better to put it briefly like that than to launch into a long and boring dissection of how irritated I am every time I remember another game I used to play and got ruined for me by someone deciding that no one was allowed nasty things happening in the game just because she didn't like them and thought we might not be able to cope. Sorry if I used a term you don't like.

Except that nothing in Prison Architect is being "ruined" because some people are sensitive to violence. First off, a scared straight program has never been implemented, thus if it is not implemented (for WHATEVER reason), the game has not been changed. Second, as I pointed out above, the objection regarding violence towards children is ill posed, as children can ALREADY suffer violence in Prison Architect, if they happen to be visiting.
