Re: Mantis spring cleaning - you can help too!

Postby mazetar » Sat Jun 07, 2014 9:47 am

I was thinking more of creating write up of issues which we seek feedback on and posting it in it's own thread here.
Not including any issues where it's the authors clarification we need of course.

Also I think some of the feedback ones can be closed?
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=1462
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=1357
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=2902
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=3467 - _alphaBeta_ did you intend to close this one?

Heres what I was writing for the feedback thread.

We need some feedback on bug reports which have been sent into Mantis.
It's important that you make notes(comments) on these mantis bugs if they still occur in the current version of PA.
If you are able to reproduce any of these bugs, then please yell out :)

Platform independent bugs
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=1155: Incident Report gone after loading a game?
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=1338 - Laundry Basket vanishes behind textures
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=1708 - Laundry workers do not collect laundry or pass on clean ones to cells.
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=2645 - Guards do not escort prisoners to "needs" location from Holding Cells.
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=1542 - Workshop prisoners delivering plates unevenly
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=2911 - Dogs stored in medical bed permanently if owner(guard) dies.
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=1771 - Daily money is not updating correctly
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=3128 - Contraband icons displaced after buying land.
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=1938 - Prisoner release rate to high? is it lower in current version?
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=3010 - Truck keeps delivering Metal Plates, does not unload
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=2069 - Prisoner equipment stuck in wall - Does this still occur?
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=28 - Able to buy/unlock the other staff members in bureaucracy despite having not the money to pay for it.

Mac Specific issues
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=3182 - Mac unable to build foundations?
http://bugs.introversion.co.uk/view.php?id=3819 - Mac Continous intake not working?

If something was reported a long time ago and we ask people to give more information or confirm that this is not happening for them anymore, because we can't reproduce, and they don't reply, then I think we will have to close it at some point. There is a close status "cannot reproduce" which fits this case.

I am working on parsing user notes so that we find duplicate candidates automatically from that etc

Isn't this more of a feature request?
At least I believe this to happen by design. Considering that it's the easiest way to implement it, avoiding to deal with a ton of issues.
Considering all the existing issues I believe this won't be added before a rework of the whole tool.

I support this being a bug. I'd also support a whole rework of the foundation tool as the parent (Mantis Artifact ID 4525) suggests. Assuming the tool isn't reworked, it's extremely annoying to only be able to construct one portion of a building of irregular shape at a time. The cross example from Reef is a good one.

mazetar wrote:I was thinking more of creating write up of issues which we seek feedback on and posting it in it's own thread here.

I'd keep the commentary specific to feedback threads in Mantis, where it's most useful to the developers. I can't see pointing them to the forums for more information. Announcing the feedback threads on the forums to generate interest doesn't seem so bad, but that will inevitably lead to the discussions taking place right in that thread (same problem). Instead, I'd try drumming up interest in the community jumping on Mantis and filtering on report IDs that have the "feedback" status. Perhaps making this announcement in one of John's threads, or having him make the announcement himself would be best. Anyone reading this: there's 52 report IDs with this status right now, mostly "do you still see this bug" type feedback is requested. Help us out.

Sorry if this sounds all too familiar from our PM discussions. I just have trouble discussing bug report specifics outside of the bug reporting system. :D

I'd close down 1462 and 2902 as the reports were vague to begin with and there's been no actual feedback. I'll leave these to you guys to make the final call as you've been handling them.

I closed 1357 and left word to re-attach the "updaterFollowup" tag. I can't see people opening a new report, since if it turns out to be a real problem the original (lower ID number) report should usually become the master. Not to mention we'll have yet another duplicate on our hands. The tag was necessary since it doesn't look like we can leave notes for closed issues. IV only opened this up for "resolved" it seems. I won't remove my email monitoring from this, so I'll keep an eye on issues like this that I close down.

I resolved 3467 given that the original bug in that report was addressed. I directed further discussion on the newer issue to another report. I always believed in keeping bug reports very specific. A new bug, even if the symptoms are nearly identical, should get a new report. In this case, the Alpha-17 dog typo was pretty clearly addressed by Alpha-18.

Seems fine to me.

mazetar wrote:On that note, I have flagged more for feedback lately, I will probably do that to many more in the comming days. If they aren't replied to within a reasonable time (2 days), then I will close them as uninformative or duplicates as apropriate.

I'd say we give people up to 5-7 days to respond though. Two days seems pretty fast and could ultimately lead to us re-opening more reports and tracking down more duplicates.

_alphaBeta_ wrote:I'm going to start targeting the laundry (04 on the assignments).

I'm still working the laundry assignment. Some of these feedback report IDs were a result. There's still more to do. Well, there will always be more to do on this I think.

I do agree with your opinion on keeping it all on mantis, not disputing that.
I've seen several notes saying "feature requests belong on the forums!!", but thats merely their opinion and not a rule?. I would personally like for all feature requests/suggestions to be on mantis as well (with severity feature). As it would enable voting and bring more active users into mantis which would increase feedback.

About the feedback.
I realise that by creating a thread asking for help and telling them to search for feedback bugs and help out, we will get discussions on the forums, but we could steer issue related talk to mantis by reminding them that there is where it counts. I will write instructions on using the search filter to find feedback issues which may help get people to use mantis them selfs :p

Oh, and I believe I didn't get to finish updating issues listed earlier so I will go do that when I get home in 30minutes.
If anyone is working on it already, please post about it :)

The original announcement of the tracker from IV seemed to indicate that the tracker was meant for bugs and that the forums were meant for feature requests and other suggestions. Since then, the tracker has filled with redundant bugs, since there has been little moderation (thankfully, this seems to be changing). With so much redundancy with only bugs going to the tracker, it seemed wise to attempt to keep feature requests to the forum so as not to add more redundant crap. If the devs are now wanting and expecting feature requests on the tracker, I am more than happy to cease directing people to the forum to post such requests.

I've finished processing the issues listed by Mhoram in his 2 posts above.
And I did process Henke's post as well.

29 bugs closed.

I'm done processing the list above.

I ended up creating a new motherbug:
4607 - Issues regarding Crash when saving / auto saving
There's now 21 issues in that group, I suspect some more of them to be duplicates but I've been in mantis for a few hours.. time to sleep :)

I've been considering creating a mother group for the dead issues for some time now.

I wonder if we could combine all those you mentioned into a single issue report "Corpses sometimes play animations despite being dead" and list all the different cases of this in that report.
But I'm a bit hesitant about doing so, so I may create it as a mother bug instead, and have a grand mother bug of all issues with corpses.

Opinions? :)

I think the motherbug method works better here.
