Ubuntu Feisty repos available

Postby SlimG » Fri Jul 13, 2007 1:01 am

John has approved my Ubuntu Feisty package, and here it is:

To fetch Defcon from the Introversion Defcon repository, run the following commands in your terminal (finish by hitting Enter after each line):

Code: Select all

echo 'deb http://download.introversion.co.uk/defcon/linux/contrib/ubuntu-feisty/ feisty main' | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo wget http://download.introversion.co.uk/defcon/linux/contrib/ubuntu-feisty/introversion-packages-slimg-key.gpg -P /tmp
sudo apt-key add /tmp/introversion-packages-slimg-key.gpg
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install defcon

Those who want to install Defcon without adding the Introversion Defcon repository can find the .deb files here:

The current package hasn't received testing on a greater scale yet, so there might be issues with it, if you find any errors with the package, please let me know and I'll try to fix it asap.

Excellent work.

Downloaded & installed fine through Synaptic, dependency detected (defcon-sounds) - many thanks for splitting this in 2 so the upgrade downloads will be smaller!

Once installed, it detected my settings and license key on first run, and seems identical so far to my previously-installed version.

Now all we need is the Linux version of v1.43 added to the repo, so we can get excited about auto-updating :)

The main difference is the added menu-shortcut with a vector logo, and I've removed the libraries provided by the defcon linux package since they're already provided by Ubuntu Feisty.

I'll update the package when updated versions of defcon 1.42 are released, currently afaik the 1.43 patch only exists for winnt, If newer versions of the linux package is released I'd be glad if you poke me about this and I'll update the Ubuntu feisty package.

The icon was one point I was going to raise - I have a generic window icon on my menu...? I checked the launcher and it is looking for defcon.svgz, but evidently not finding it.

I don't know of a new version for Linux yet, fingers crossed it will appear quickly - in the meantime, have you considered turning your genius to a repo version of Darwinia?

The icon is located here: /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/defcon.svgz
Seems like Gnome can't update it's iconcache automatically, I'll try to add a workaround for Ubuntu users to fix this.
Thanks for letting me know.

I can't remember if any of the previous IV creations had demos unlockable to fullversions like Defcon, I'll consider creating .deb packages of the previous IV demos anyway.

Good point - I forgot that Darwinia just had single-level demos :(

Hopefully this will be different with Multiwinia, and it would be great anyway to have IV demos made more available since plenty of Ubuntu users won't like to dig around in their systems to make things work. The package manager is a great feature for Linux newbies...

Have you posted the new repo details on ubuntuforums? I reckon that would be a great place to publicise this, since the Defcon Linux Help forum has a far smaller audience.

I'll second that. Most people over there haven't really heard of Defcon, or Introversion :O

A quick mention in the gaming section would probably see a lot more people try it out!

I needed to replace defcon.svgz with an uncompressed defcon.svg (Thanks to Inkscape...) and

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/defcon.desktop

to edit the menu entry and change the "icon" path accordingly. Seems Gnome doesn't like to use svgz at my end.

Still, I now have a nuke icon, which is nice. :)

(I must also say thanks for not using an overly colourful, glassy, 3D-effect icon. Much as I prefer the recent Windows icon to the original flat & ugly one I think your icon looks really neat in the menu...)

New Defcon package revision in repos.

I've applied a fix to one the defcon package that preferably should initiate the icon-cache regeneration and provide Gnome users with icons too.

If you try to upgrade your packages your defcon should automatically be upgraded to the revision mentioned above and hopefully give you icons out-of-box, but you probably have to remove the custom .desktopfile you've created to make your icon work.

It would be nice if anyone could tell me if the icon from this defcon revision works out-of-box.

Ps. I'll look into creating .deb packages of previous IV demos soon.

Same issues I'm afraid - I removed the replacement icon and the .desktop entry, the update was detected as intended but the resulting .desktop file still wanted to load "defcon.svgz" with no path information, and I am still not sure if Gnome will be happy with gzipped icons - *every* other icon usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps on Ubuntu 7.04 is a plain .svg file.

Thanks for trying to fix this, fingers crossed a solution will be found!

Great job

But I can't make the Icon to work, just take off the gzip, no need for it anyway
