Getting prisoners to SLEEP

Postby Frannyan » Sun Jan 05, 2014 8:06 pm

Started a new prison and as always, getting through the first day is a nightmare. This time, I have a very frustrating problem where, despite the need being in the red and the regime being "sleep" my prisoners are NOT going to sleep. They've arrived with the need high and I cannot get past 6pm without a riot. No matter what I try, they won't sleep.

Any ideas?

Did you build beds?Or, did you build a cell but forgot to zone it as CELL? Or did you put the regime on "sleep"?

First, it is important to understand what the regime settings do. The settings don't force the prisoners to do any particular activity. Instead, they direct the prisoners to go into a certain room. From there, the prisoners will fulfill any needs that they can while they are in the room. So when you put an hour of "Sleep" into your regime, you are actually directing your prisoners to go to their cells for that hour. They may sleep if they are tired, or use the toilet, or do whatever else they can do in their cell.

Second, as of alpha 14 or 15, prisoners cannot sleep during the day. No matter how tired they are, they can only sleep at night.

So, you are sending prisoners to their cells, where they cannot fulfill any needs but sleep and potty (unless you have other facilities in the cells), and they cannot sleep because it is the middle of the day. This is a recipe for disaster. I would suggest that you first remove the sleep time from daylight hours entirely, then work on fulfilling other needs that can be taken care of during the day (food, for instance).

Every need except sleep was being taken care of, but they still rioted because they were so low on sleep.

When does it count as night? I finally just reloaded a much earlier save before I opened doors and I'm hoping the new batch will have less sleep deprivation...

Between 10 PM and 6 AM, I believe.

yea first day can be ruff but its not too hard either...make sure your prisoners are forced to stay in a group and just keep your guards in the same room at all times...they don't seem to riot if guards are close to them....deployment makes this easier but you don't need it...just manually make the gaurd go back if he leaves...and manually open any doors that the guards are trying to run away to open...i also recommend using 1 hour of shower first thing in the morning to force everyone to wake up helps to keep prisoners on the same sleeping scheadual but make sure a guard or two is ready in the shower...this is probably the most dangerous time of the day

also for the first day i usually keep the default regime...and adjust it to my liking after they go to sleep...keeps em in their cell for most of the day...2nd day is much calmer (usually)
