Janitors doing laundry...

Postby solitude1984 » Sun Jan 05, 2014 3:37 pm

Having janitors doing laundry is driving me crazy. There are areas of the prison that are filthy, and all they want to do now is put away clothes! They are not maids, and I don't want them doing that. I feel like I constantly have to redirect them to areas that are dirty. It's really annoying me. Please give us the option to turn this off.

true, especially since you can order prisoners to do the laundry, but you can't order them to clean the floor

But still it is very unhandy that janitors also do laundry, having the option of them doing that, or cleaning or both would be much appreciated I feel

It's a bit off at the moment. On one hand letting your janitors do some laundrywork allows you to have the laundry ready before prisoners arrive, on the other hand it does get in the way of them cleaning. Right now it's useless to put prisoners to work in your laundry because the janitors will do it all, perhaps prisoners should be able to combine cleaning and laundry aswell

Perhaps a sort of toggle/priority option?
Toggle: enable/disable janitor's ability to clean/do laundry. So you can disable the doing of laundry if you want.
Priority: allow you to set absolute priority of cleaning/laundry. Janitor will only do laundry if there's no cleaning job anywhere on the map (very unlikely, but possible if you have a lot of janitors), or vice versa.

I like that. I hope they implement it.

You know, I would really like that. I have thought before that I'd like to be able to prioritize jobs. Like, if there are wounded prisoners waiting to be escorted to medical aid or protected cells, the nearest guards who aren't invested in a big problem should drop everything to get them out of the crowd and into help. But same thing with janitors: Clean up blood and body fluids first. Then some players would want laundry done first and general cleanup second, while others would want general cleanup first and laundry second, so it should be a priority list based on what the player most needs or wants.

How many work slots are available for laundry work? If you have different regimes for each security level, and you order their work slots so they don't overlap, you can have prisoners working in the laundry - in shifts - throughout the day.

A similar sort of thing happens with shop - if your work slots are staggered over the different regimes, then it means the shop is manned for more hours a day. I usually arrange it so that there while one regime is working, at least one of the other regimes are on free time, etc. This way you get much better utilisation of your labour rooms.

considering they only do laundry, if there is laundry to do, i have to wonder how many janitors you have for your prison. i have a prison with about 400 inmates (give or take 20ish) and with 15 janitors and 4 laundry areas i almost never have dirty areas, i also have inmates set to work in the laundry areas, as well as 2 decently sized cleaning cupboards with inmates working them as well.

This is where a new class of prison workers would work nicely I suggested in another post. Trustees. Basically these would run on their own schedule which is basically 8AM - 11PM working with a couple of meals thrown in there for them. If your prisoners were well behaved, they could then earn a position in the Trustee program. These would be like staff members without keys. They would deliver laundry, clean, move laundry carts, deliver meals to prisoners on punishment or locked down all the time, move materials like the workers, and can also access staff only areas. The general idea is that it pays to be good. If you behave and don't tick off, you can be out of your cell for 16 hours a day and almost like a free man. You get to work to make the prison work beyond that of prisoner jobs. Also these jobs would pay higher than normal jobs. If you run or get into trouble, they immediately get busted back down to normal prisoners and the next guy eligible for trustee status takes his place. You could decide how many trustees you need via a policy setting of whether you even use them at all. This would free up staff members to do other tasks.
