Is Prison Architect an indie game?

Postby Penroyaltea » Fri Nov 29, 2013 11:25 pm

I had an argument with my bf who claimed it wasn't, because the guys who made it have done other successful things.
I think it is, because.

Define your terms. What is an "indie game"?

Indie, for me at least, a low budget game since they didn't have publishers. Now though, it's changed to whatever game 'is making a stand against big publisher companies'. I'm not sure IV is doing that, they just want to make a fun game.

Many would argue that Introversion are the pioneers of the indy devs. Their slogan is/was 'The last of the bedroom programmers'. The fact they are successful now doesn't make them any less indy.

That's what I thought.

I don't really know what the real definition of indie is for games. I know what it is for music, but if it's the same then there is a mseeive cross over between success, comercialisation, popularity and style. There are many indie bands who are successful and rich.

I think the most important thing is the style of the game, and how it feels like the developers are just as packetsardines says, in their bedrooms (figuratively).

To me it feels like Prison Architect is a project designed and made by a group of people who are actually involved and creative, and not like EA Games where they just give some vague idea to a bunch of faceless computer monkeys to milk profits out of people.

Me too. :(

I hate what they did to Simcity.

I wish PA would make more textures and wall types. One of te things that annoys me is I cant make 'beautiful' prisons yet. I don't care about dogs and contraband, I want to do architect things, as the title suggests.
