Cell and prison design

Postby RuneRifle » Fri Aug 02, 2013 3:38 pm

Hey guys, I was wondering what kinds of designs for your cells and prisons you have come up with. Do you give them all the luxury they can ever want or are you just banging them into a 2x3 cell and mashing as many prisoners together as you can?

I had 2 prisons before the one I am running now, and they were screwed really fast because I had no idea what I was doing. The biggest problems for me were showers and recreation. I always got riots because they couldn't have enough recreation even though I had a big common room with dozens of TVs and bookshelves and 4 pool tables. It just didn't work. This is why I have moved my showers into the cells (which work amazing) and I've also put a TV in the cells. This took care of pretty much every problem I had. I don't get any riots anymore, not even after a full shakedown.

My cells:

As you can see, everything was carefully planned. The only place I kind of screwed up was the kitchen (it has to be adjecent to the canteen with a staff door in between. A hall between them really slows it down), which will moved slightly when I expand my map. The only thing is that they really want to shower when they wake up, but that's the first thing they can do so riots do stay out.

My regime:

With this regime, my workshop produces about 2k cash each day, which is more than enough, since the biggest cash is in the prisoners anyway.

Feel free to comment on my designs and post your own :) it would be fun to see what everyone is creating!

A very neat idea.

I just build the basic 3x2 cell and larger communal shower blocks.

On the cash front, with the amount of prisoners you have, you could be making 10k+ a day from the workshop.

True, but is it neccesary? I'd rather add a bigger laundry room to make sure that runs smoothly or add a cleaning closet to make sure everything is clean :)

Just adding 1 more work hour to the schedule already increased the income by 1k. Money is not an issue when you have a decent running prison :) just wait a few days.

How did you plan this design and how did you built it so precise while you have limited money at the start?
Cuz fuck logic

Well, the planning took a while, and of course I grabbed all the grants. After that I started with the fence around everything, and added the offices and generator room above the gate. I also added the first 4 cells and added the holding cell (which was in a different location at first though, the yard used to be about 8 blocks smaller at the bottom). I also added the canteen and the kitchen. I got some riots and 3 dead guys because everything still sucked, but after that everything went smoother and smoother. It took about 100 ingame days to finish it this way though..

It's just careful planning and only grab what you need, and make sure everyone is happy.

Also, at the start i had only the warden. After that I (finally) got the foreman and unlocked prison labor. I had about 20 prisoners I think. Then I made the workshop and it went a little better from there.

It was hard, and it will take a while (at least 20 real life hours), but it is doable.

I haven't used any mods or eiditted any files. This was just the vanilla game.

Why do you have 2 hours of meal time?

One of most efficient prisons to date. they get the same stuff in their cells as yourself but not as much room.

I work them a lot harder than you though OP. 8hours solid in the workshop. 20k per day ;)

Small tip:you'll probably want to move your workshops closer to your entrance for your next prison. Gives the workers less distance to work with delivered metal
Looks good though :)

My basic cell is a bit different- but then, I'm pretty sure I'm building something closer to a very strict vocational school than a prison.

Image
Yup- showerhead, toilet bed, tv, phone booth, these cells are like a really compact discount hotel room. The only modification I'm thinking of making is moving the toilet atop the drain between the shower head and bed- that way I can get it within a 2x3 area for a Cell, while leaving the shower head to become a small Shower. I was wondering why my prisoners would just stand around during the Shower portion of my regime, then immediately start using it at Free Time; I'm guessing that not having an area designated a Shower room is the cause.

Image

I do blocks of 10 cells, separated off by Jail Doors. In theory this would be very helpful in a lockdown situation- but I've yet to actually need one. This also separates each block into a sector for Deployment purposes, and I could easily put a metal detector every block or two to cut down on contraband. Generally though I tend to try and bottleneck the problem at the source.

Image

Because the map is wider than tall, I try to keep my construction modules horizontal. I set up this design for my latest small prison; the canteen will feed 80 prisoners, and the kitchen can easily keep up with two meals per day with four cooks. I've made the decision to designate the Kitchen as Staff-Only, to cut down on the amount of contraband the prisoners have access to. I tend to have a guard patrolling a three square path by the door, to immediately catch anyone with contraband. Honestly I tend to get more alarms from prisoners coming in than going out.

Image

My administration block is very utilitarian, and tends to get shoved off to a corner of the map next to the road, with the only door leading out. The only visitors are Janitors, so my Warden, Chief, Accountant, and Foreman can just wander in circles all day, ignored.

Image

The infirmary doesn't get many visitors, if any, so I've kept it pretty small. I've shoved the Psychologist's office in here because it makes sense in my head to have all the medical stuff in one place. Because the morgue leads out to freedom, I've tried to keep several layers of staff doors and a good bit of distance between them to prevent escapes. The entire area is Staff Only, since the only visitors to the infirmary will be under guard escort, so again I've tried to cut down the amount of contraband available. Honestly I didn't try for space efficiency here just because I had extra room, and I allowed myself to go with some aesthetic choices. I like the hallways three wide so I can center the door. I could have easily compacted the morgue down to two slabs, but again, I didn't need to with my overall layout.

Image

The maximum workshop options, as I can figure it. Three tables easily handles the necessary sheet metal and completed license plates in my daily shift, and one room can employ two cell blocks. I could have compacted the work stations down further, but after watching the pathing on the prisoners and workers, I decided an open grid design would work best for getting pieces from place to place quickly. Again, a metal detector at the door to catch contraband. It's worth noting I keep normal doors on workshops and the canteen to cater to the prisoners' freedom need.

All my other rooms are designed according to available space and security. I use Janitors rather than a cleaning cupboard (my prisoners only cleaned the cupboard once and then just wandered around, anyways- and again, less contraband), the cells' deluxe accommodations means a common room falls into disuse, and I could probably even forego a visitation room thanks to the phones- it would reduce the contraband, micromanagement of opening staff doors, cut opportunities to escape, and be more efficient. My laundry, yard and storage rooms tend to be whatever's available around the rest; the utilities are usually shoved into a storage room or in available gaps between buildings. My most frequent offenders are prisoners carrying contraband, who end up shoved back in their cells, but for solitary I'll usually have some space between disconnected cell blocks where I can hook up a toilet and add a door.

@stormcaller

1. Your shower isn't working because you have not designated it as a shower (3x2 cell block then 1block as shower)
2. Too many sink imo in your kitchen, but then i normally have more cookers and fridges.

only other thing i might suggest is having your workshops as follows:

The plate processing goes as follows Metal > Saw > Press > Table

So either reverse the order your work shop is so the saws are at top and press at bottom or think of a way to have the tables near the presses, they are my suggestions anyway. As for contraband no need to sort that out really they dont use it at the moment to cause issues.

Right now, my prison has this kind of cells (which are similar to the Stormcaller3801 ones):

So, in a 4x2 block, they have it all: bed, shower, toilet, television and phone. Until now, everything worked just fine.

I never thought of putting a shower in their room! Think I'll be borrowing that idea...

Me to. I always build these shower area's for each cell block, but putting a shower in their cell might be cheaper. :P

Interesting- I was hesitant to put the tv in a place the water could reach, out of fear it would cause problems with electrical shorts. But I guess that works out just fine. That could save money with less drains.

Did you put a 1x1 shower room designation under the shower head, or is that a trick of the lighting?

How well is your laundry working, if I may ask? I have a theory that they don't like to use more than one laundry hamper at a time; I noticed that it wasn't until I built enough cells for the laundry workers to empty their hamper of fresh uniforms that they started gathering up the discarded dirty ones.

Ive already answered that for you, he has

As for laundry whos that directed to?
They mainly use one laundry room, one hamper from what ive seen though i swear on the "odd" occasion if seen another prisoner push a hamper.

As for putting showers into there cells being cheaper its not example:

40 cells require 40 showers, 20 drains (minimum) = $1,200 + pipe

40cells + 20 shared showers, 6 drains = $520 + pipe

Advantages to doing cell showers? None really other than they get showered quicker and no fights if they have a high need for hygiene
Disadvantages i sometimes saw prisoners go from one end of the prision to the other to use something like a shower, tv, or phone + if they riot more damage to fix.
