Think it would be amazing to have a mail room in the prison. It would work similarly to the laundry. Prisoners man it and deliver the mail to the cells. Receiving mail will satisfy the family need.
it would also add to the contraband and economy on this is implemented

Make it so the room requires either a guard or mail man to be in there and they will screen all mail. Means we would have to buy x-ray machines etc
They open the mail and examine it, not just for contraband but also messages hidden in letters and other undesirable content.
Possibly the ability to decide how much censorship you want; you can have most of it done by prisoners, and just a few guards on x-ray machines ... or you could have a group of professional mailmen searching, and reading, all mail thoroughly.
The more lax option would not only be cheaper, but would allow quicker processing (thus quicker fulfillment of family need), whereas the stricter option would prevent as much contraband getting in (but would be quite expensive).

OK, how is this idea:
Mail "arrives" at a time, and then is distrubuted by prison labor at a later time.
Guards have X hours to screen the mail, before it is picked up by prisoners and delivered... so if you keep pulling guards away to break up fights or escort prisoners, you are likely to deliver a few letters with smokes, alcohol, weapons or even keys (which is unplausable but would be super fun).
That makes it like other aspects in the prison: if you are willing to invest the effort, things run smoothly.
Also I think mail can be a great source of "family" and other needs.
Lastly it might be a source of "magazines" which are a real prison currency and luxury... magazines and comics are passed around a lot.

+1
If prisoners may working around, they help it faster but may loose and let some forbidden in the jail. While use only officers will be a lot slower but clean.
If you build x-ray machine so you can receive letters and parcels, need more people to checking. But if you don't (which up to you) only letters will be send to prison.

Madman, you're right, but it's literally impossible to check every single letter. All of them are x-ray'd, and letters headed to known gang members or contraband smugglers is generally targeted for opening.
'Sides, all prisoners are stripped down and searched in real life, but in prison architect they just walk in.

honestly, they go further than all that from what i saw in county, every piece of mail that gets delivered is opened, the stamp is removed (in case of doses of acid or similar) and the letter itself is read for content, anything deemed too much is simply not delivered until you are released or returned to the person who sent it.
however, now that i think about it, i like the as secure as you can be bothered to suggestion on how to do it and that may just satisfy both camps, wouldn't it?
