[Prison Exchange] Share your prisons & mods!

Postby lukegb » Thu Nov 01, 2012 5:21 pm

jelco and I have been working together to evolve PrisonNET into a more robust and wide-ranging system suitable for sharing not just prisons, but mods too!

So, without further ado:

Prison Exchange!

Image

We offer:
  • Convenient thumbnailing of prisons
  • Easy upload process
  • Search
  • Versioning of your prisons and mods
  • Download counting
  • Ability to direct link

We're looking for:
  • Graphic design - someone please make us a logo and design our frontpage <3

Mod manager authors:
If you make a mod manager/map manager for Prison Architect, please get in touch with me - you can ping us at staff@prison-exchange.com - we've got a nice little API for you to query our dataset with and we'd love to give you access.

Feedback?
We'd love your feedback to help improve the site and make it awesome. Ping me at staff@prison-exchange.com or find us on IRC at #prisonexchange on irc.uplinkcorp.net

I wanted to upload a map but I wouldn't really call it a bug demo or a challenge. Maybe reword it?

And I'm not a fan of having to fill out the resource description either - make it optional maybe.

Nice design though :)

edit - would be nice if you had steps 1 & 2 on the same page.

Will there be a way to distinguish which version the map/mod is?

When you upload a map you're asked to select from a list of versions of Prison Architect that it's compatible with - you can also update this later if no breaking changes were made.

The download button on the main resource page always links to the download of the latest version that's available.

I'm thinking about the resource description - I do think it's sensible to be made to actually think about why you want to share this with the world.

While I think what you have done so far is great I would suggest adding the ability to leave comments so others can leave feedback on each of the prisons.

just a thought

Thanks for all the hard work in getting it going!

adico: issue with thumbnails being overwritten should be fixed.

Public facing changes include:
  • Added a couple new categories, including "general".
  • The currently-running git hash is now displayed at the bottom of each page. (df301787f)
  • Added an "apps" section. (556d34bb0)
  • Fixed thumbnails with a different height screwing up the display grid. (0ece9cc40, 8772f27fc)

I whole heartedly agree. It would be great to hear what other players think of the maps, maybe even a rating system so that players can choose what they wish to download based on ratings, assuming we can trust ourselves to rate prisons what we think is appropriate and not just "slam" other players prisons, for the most part on sites that I visit as well as operate myself people are good about rating when there is a rating system.

As for the design of the site...

I must say that I love the colors and the simplicity of the site design, it's very nice and clean which is what I personally love to see when I visit sites such as yours. Keep up the great work.

Also, I'm curious if this database system (upload/download/register etc) is of your own design or are you using a commercially available product?
I have a site that uses the forums for our uploads and downloads and comments etc, and it's been great and has over 150,000 members using it, but I've been wanting to reduce the overhead and turn it into more of a system the way that your site works but have not yet found a robust system that is either free or commercially available that does everything we need it to do.
