Linux Build?

Is there an ETA on the availability of the promised Linux build?

As I don't have a Mac and would rather stick forks in my eyes and have a random sprite for a head than get Windows (or a Mac for that matter), I'm feeling mislead that nothing indicated that a build did not exist before I parted with the money and that there's no mention of it (other than 'na') anywhere now that I have.

VM seems like your best bet right now. Or you could try Wine (trololololol).

Despite gsuberland's unhelpful comment, Wine actually works extremely well (tested with 1.5.13). I thought there were lighting bugs, but as it turns out, they exist in the Windows version too.

On the purchase page, there is no Linux alpha build promised on there. There is a Linux final build promised, however.

I wish there was a Linux alpha build, as I don't use Wine and don't own Windows or a Mac. I should have read more carefully.

At least I'll get to play it some day...

Just install Wine, and then open the prison architect.exe. It probably won't need any configuration or anything.

wine is really good and requires zero effort. i installed it with one command and was able to play world of warcraft extremely well in ubuntu

I'm running it in wine, NO problem, you don't even need to install any prereqs it just works

I am constantly impressed by IV's track record when it comes to Wine. In my experience, every one of their games works perfectly out of the box under wine.

Clearly I've not used Wine in a while. Back when I last tried, it was a catastrophe!

I've run Linux exclusively for over ten years (as of August 18th, but really, who's keeping track?). The only PC games I buy are the ones from a developer that supports Linux. I'm OK with waiting for the final release, I was just disappointed that I misread the page before buying into the alpha, that's all.

If I get desperate, I will use Wine.. But it's very unlikely. I'm pretty patient.

Just curious as to the reason you're so reluctant to run wine.

If it's because of the security risk, have you considered running it as a separate user and chrooted?

There really are loads of apps and games that run seamlessly under wine. Some run even better than under windows. Not sure if you've seen the appdb, but here's their top performers:

Valve and Steam are shifting focus to Linux, it makes sense to release a native version---maybe even a "launch" title.

Regarding Wine: it's nice to get the game working, but I don't like being a second-class citizen.

IV have a pretty decent history of providing native Linux versions of their games, though it sometimes happens a little later---even today, the number of Linux gamers is small compared to the number of Windows, or even Mac, gamers, which means that getting Linux up and running is not the first priority. However, IV have basically confirmed that there will be a Linux version eventually. Until that time, virtualization seems to be the only alternative.

What? No, wine is an excellent alternative... Prison Architect will run much faster under wine than it will under any kind of virtualization. In fact, I think Prison Architect runs faster under wine than it does under windows (although this in itself is often the case with wine).

Isn't Wine a form of virtualization? I understand that it doesn't emulate the entire machine, but it passes Windows API calls to the OS as POSIX calls, adding a layer of virtualization between the program and the OS. Or is my use of the word incorrect?
