MagnusApollo over at ASW posted this, I thought I might post it over here, as well:

A short review of Darwinia. At the moment, the user rating is rather low (6.6 out of 10 when I showed up, 7.5 out of 10 when I left :) I think we should do something about that ;)

What about the children? I don't mind them, as long as they are served medium rare, but what bearing does that have on the current discussion? ;)

The point is not to vote truthefully, but to inflate the score as high as possible. Geez.

"Not a lot of replay value?" Even without the mods, no way.

Also, the reviewer said the game took 8-10 hours to complete. Wha? How many cases of Jolt(tm) cola does that include? I spent 17 hours the first day alone, and close to 40 hours total the first time through. And that was in full-on addiction mode! After 5 plays (not including mods and mod replays) I have it down to just over 7 hours. I still want to do it in one block of time, I just haven't gotten started early enough on a free day to do it.

Anyway, after I visited the site, the average was up to 9.45 with 22 people voting. That was about 12 hours ago.

Know what? F*ck em. This game has more replay value than anything else, what with all the mods out. Insurrection is just one example, and it took me about 3/4 as long as it took me to beat the NORMAL game to beat Insurrection.

Hrm... my first time through, it took about 7 hours, though I had been playing the Mine demo in beta for months by that time. 10 hours seems reasonable. As to subsequent times through, Biosphere is the only level that I cannot beat in less than 10 minutes. I can finish Mine, Garden, and Containment in less than 5. The whole game is less than two hours... I think you are just slow ;)

I'd like to see that!

Maybe so, but I get to enjoy it longer!

I don't have any way of recording a game, or otherwise proving it. However, NeoThermic has written a guide to finishing each level in less than five minutes. Maybe he has video?

I do, ish. The problem with Darwinia is there's two levels that don't lend themselves to being done quick by the required objectives. Those levels are receiver and biosphere. The former I've done in 6:45, the latter takes shade over 7. However, I've got videos of the rest of the levels if one wishes. (Although I'll have to convert them from the RAW capture size)
