Does Darwinia have CD protection??

Postby tim73 » Thu May 26, 2005 4:31 pm

From another website

http://www.fileforums.com/showthread.php?t=68721

I bought this game, and installed it from the cd, as opposed to playing it from the cd, which was another option. Now I've not come across any such message, and I'm well into the game without the cd being inserted. As I installed the game from the Desktop (27mb), the cd was not present, and so if any cd checks had been made, then I presume I would have seen the above message, and had to re-install from the cd. Does this mean the developers themselves release a 'triggered' version of the game onto the Internet. I also scanned the cd copy protection, and couldn't find any, so now I'm more confused. Do I need to re-install the game from the CD? I don't want to get way into it, only to discover some trigger messes my games up.

AFAIK there is no CD protection, I think the devs thought getting some wouldn't save enough in prevented piracy to cover itself.

Or they put the paying customers before the pirates by saying we deserve the right to play without the CD

Nope, there is no copy protection, no serial numbers, no codecards, nothing. Chris said he though that these measures didn't work and just pissed off paying customers, so he didn't bother with them

Edit: Someone on those forums got pwnd by a fake warez version :D

Oh well.. life goes on.

And just so ya know ppl.. I will be purchasing the game in the near future. And not because of being PWND. Been wanting to get it, just haven't been able just yet.

I certainly appreciate the lack of protection. I bought the game. I love the game. However, I also love not having to hold on to a damageable CD or a used up CDROM slot. Kudos to Introversion for putting customers first!

heh, if that screencap is legit, I think your computer should then get infected with some annoyance program that displays red worms made out of triangles all over your screen.

There was a rather lengthy discussion of possible ways to protect Darwinia a while ago and in the end I believe most people came to believe that flooding P2P networks with fakes like this one was the best way to protect Darwinia (simply annoy the pirates enough that most of them will simply not bother). :)

Hahaha, it's a good idea, actually. It's probably cheaper than copy protection, too. Does it happen right at the start?

You mean when we started flooding the p2p networks?

That started before the game was released.

That's the way to go about it. It's also good to see that the programmers had a bit of fun and were creative in protecting their game.

kinda...

It could be like an extension of the demo? since it lets you play two levels... neither of which are the demo level (Mine)

That makes a total of 3 "free" levels you can get

The first two levels are... terrible. Makework to get you accustomed to the game.
