thx to Masaq for the rules (edited):

The concept is simple:

1.) There can only be one King at any given time
2.) The King will be dethroned by losing to a challenger or by automatic forfeit (see #12-16)

The match organising rules are as follows:

3.) The current King may be challenged by posting: "I challenge the King!" OR joining the KOTH server where (obviously) the reigning king must be present. (*See #6)
4.) A King can be dethroned by specific challenge or winning a game against him by entering the KOTH server. Screenshots must validate results. (PM thumbnails to me and I'll put them up next to your name). Post more thorough debriefs in the, er, D-room. If needed I will make a KOTH debrief thread)
5.) A specific challenge should be followed by The King and the Challenger sending PMs to agree on a password.
6.) Drop-in challengers will have to get an updated PW for each new KOTH server in order to prevent identity theft. (PM the PW to the host once you enter to validate your ID). *
7.) All matches must be played with the settings mentioned above.
8.) The winner shall be the new King, and will PM the screenie to me. Post "I AM THE KING!" and VOILA! you have your name in red for all to see! :D :D :D
9.) This topic should be used only for posting challenges and results. All match communication should be done via another topic or Private Messages

The following rules govern who may challenge, and when:

10.) If only the challenger and the King is present, the throne may switch unlimited, screenies must validate all matches.
11.) If the King is dethroned and other challengers are present and willing, he may not rechallenge until the new King has survived/played 1 match. If several challengers are present, he must join the queue from the back

The following rules determine the outcome in various circumstances:

12.) Should a King be unable to play a challenger within a reasonable period (2 DAYS), the challenger shall win by default
12B) If the King is unavailable (outside the 2 day limit) and/or refuse to defend his throne, you can seize the throne via a
COUP*
(See below for explanation)
13.) Should either player quit before the match has ended without the agreement of the other player, the OTHER PLAYER becomes/remains KING.
14.) If one of the players lose connection in the first half (15mins) of the game, the game must restart.
15.) If one or both players fail to reconnect, the KING remains in power. If conn is lost by either player after 2/3 (10min warning) are played, the game will continue to the end with CPU replacement. CPU result is valid. If no screenie validates, the match goes in favor of the KING.
16.) The buffer time (15--->10mins remaining) between 1/2 and 2/3 must be played in order to allow a player to reconnect...

17.)SERVER NAME: Every KOTH server must be named "King Of The Hill (PW#)". If someone tries to coup the throne you must tag the server "King Of The Hill - COUP" Tag all server with (PW + #) to let all the KOTH players know which password to use.

18.) CHEATERS: Trust is worth a lot, esp. on the net. But if any KOTH player is suspected of foul play that player will be banned from entering the KOTH ranks AND he will become a LEPER, thrown into the pit of infamy for all eternity.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* COUP: If the throne is undefended, 2 players from the list can battle for it by organising a KOTH server. The winner of the first bout is the new King. Until a new King is decided the reigning King shall stay in power. A regning King may NOT claim a seat in the 2 first KOTH-COUP server games. As stated in #11 a reigning King may not challenge the winner (the new King) of the COUP server before that player has defended his throne ONCE. This means that the loser of the first COUP game can rechallenge the COUP King right away (if there isn't a queue.)
(PRE-COUP: KOTH players waiting to challenge the King can set up a server and battle for the throne. If the King does not respond/defend within his time limit the winner of these games will automatically become King. Screenies required of course.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

***As King you have a duty to be available as much as possible. When online, try to be logged on to Hamachi so challengers can get hold of you . Inform others of the opportunity. Check your Hamachi to see if any of the KOTH players are online. (see below)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHALLENGERS: (I will colour code results. Ex: If the first challenger won I will code him red. If he loses he will be coloured cyan

*PLAYER NAME* (PM me or post the URL to the screenie to validate)

NB!NB!: I will send a PW list to everyone registered here. Each time a new KOTH server is up (i.e. every new challenge) the next PW on the list will be required for validation. Please keep the list confidential to prevent cheaters. :P
***new players: please PM me and I will send you the list...
If I am unavailable and you need the PW list to enter the queue in a running KOTH server, PM any of the REGISTERED PLAYERS for the list

All KOTH players should get Hamachi. A simple and clean IM program. Get it here.
Download and join the group DefconKOTH. Password is KOTH. Please use your player name for simplicity. This way we can make the process of challenging and setting up matches much easier. Thx to Ace Rimmer for the tip. :D
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHICH PASSWORD TO USE? Either use the same PW# as there are matches or just pick one... I will expand the list so we have more to choose from. Please shuffle the use of passwords, so we dont use the same ones too much. Remember to name each server "King of the Hill (PW#)". The passwords are case sensitive. For now use higher case letters but when I send out the expanded list I will make them lower case.

nah, anyone there can play. Me mentioning vets was only a prompt to give the most hardcore players the best opposition possible.

maybe shrink the worldscale a bit, just to give it that extra speed. i think a decent 'winner stays on' evening would need quite rapid games.
May the blessing of the bomb almighty descend on us all, this day and forever more.

wouldn't you think setting a max game time is enough? reducing size changes the whole dynamic set up...

As Erasmus said; the world should be shrunk a little to allow slightly quicker games thanks to the extra range on units etc, without forcing relatively new players to have to play at 10x speed or whathaveyou (Speed Defcon terrifies me, if I'm honest!).

Also, what might be an idea would be to have two of them going on side-by-side:

Limited KotH - the occasional evening you suggested, in which anyone can turn up, spec or play.

Ongoing KotH - set up a new topic, with someone (yourself, or anyone who wanted it) as King. Then, one person at a time can issue a challenge by posting on the topic, and no-one else can issue a fresh challenge until the results of the game are posted below the challenge post. Winner stays on. Keep the topic un-cluttered (with a separate topic for post-match discussion, analysis, bragging rights etc), and you end up with a neat history of the title and the players.

If the title kept rotating between the same three or four expert players, you could introduce a three-challenge rule or some such so that a defeated king had to wait for a certain number of other challengers to come forward to play his victor before he could make an attempt to reclaim it. Then at least there'd be four matches played between someone being defeated and the earliest chance they'd get to retake the title. If one of the other challengers immediately defeated their victor, the slate would obviously be wiped clean allowing the former king to take on the new title holder.

Speed Defcon is very simple. It should not be scary.

How to win at Speed Defcon: Don't think. Just play.

Thinking about strategy for even a couple of seconds puts you at a disadvantage. Just place as you normally do and move fast. Shoot first and often because by the time everyone else does, the vic timer surprises them and once that hits, it's to late to get points. At 20x, there's no way to get all of your silos emptied before the timer runs out. Shoot often meaning reload and empty bombers as quickly as you can. Letting them fight naval battles or sitting idle in bases/carriers is a mistake.

But I'm a nurse! I'm not allowed to even take a piss without assessing the situation (my bladder aches!), planning my action (going to walk to bathroom, unzip flies, point genitalia at toilet, urinate), implementing it (aaaaaaaaaaah!), reassessing the situation (bladder is empty, no embarrassing drips on trousers) and evaluating the efficacy (yay, sucessful piss taken with minimum social faux pas) :P

Asking me to play defcon without thinking is like asking a fish not to be quite so fond of water lol.

Well, it's the only way to win Speed Defcon. It's similar to Orgazmo, but at least in Orgazmo you can make quick decisions.

I wonder, has anybody ever tried playing via Hamachi?

If there were players out there with it, it's possible I could log in and play (from work, its 12pm my time currently GMT-4) those that are online when I'm not?? Never tried it.
