Alt key catching
Holding alt and pressing tab once is fine, pressing tab anymore times before releasing alt is caught by the WM.

What WM are you using?
I disagree. It is clearly a focusing issue as it does not occur in fullscreen. I cannot reproduce this in UT2004, Doom3, etc. This can be fixed.

It doesnt occur in fullscreen because it's full screen, your WM is no longer thinking of it as another window. If ut2k4 and doom 3 don't act this way in windowed it is because they are grabbing keyboard focus and hence not letting you use it for anything else, which can be annoying if you are trying to run the game in the window for the purpose of doing other things at the same time.

But doesn't that make windowed mode near useless if the WM grabs the Alt+Tab?
A simple work around (as at least I like to switch between windowed games and other apps and would like to keep that key combo with the WM) would be to either make the "Alt" display sticky (Alt again to close for example) or change the key combo to something more neutral like "Alt+space"

For a game like darwinia it should grab all they keys it needs. I typically use desktop changing to escape from windowed games anyway.
The grabbing KB focus may be a little annoying to some, but the alternative is very bad.
