DEFCON42 DEFCON ladder - Update (v1.2) - Mail notifications!

Postby jelco » Fri Apr 13, 2007 12:17 pm

As you may know, I have been designing a ladder system for DEFCON in the past week. After a good four days of coding, it's finally done! You can find it at http://defcon.portal42.net. You can see some screenshots of the system here:
http://img.portal42.net/defcon42/DEFCON42_screen_00.PNG
http://img.portal42.net/defcon42/DEFCON42_screen_01.PNG
http://img.portal42.net/defcon42/DEFCON42_screen_02.PNG
http://img.portal42.net/defcon42/DEFCON42_screen_03.PNG

(The green marking in the first screenshot is only there to mark that's you. I was logged in at that moment.)

I'm sorry, I don't have screenshots of the confirmation page or match page as I just truncated the table. But you can see for yourself! All you have to do is register at the Portal42 forums. After that, you can submit your matches. After submitting, the other players have to confirm the match really happened. When all players confirm, the scores are updated and the ladder shows the new top player.

When a match is reported instead of confirmed, I will look into it and see if it needs changes or deletion. Multiple false entries will result in a ban.

I hope you like it, and I really hope to see some matches of the upcoming tournament submitted. It would be a nice way for me to see if any problems arise.

If you don't get it, I've written a small guide to the system, of which a link can be found on the front page. If you're interested, give it a try!

DEFCON42 can be found at http://defcon.portal42.net.

Very good.

I just wonder how many folk will be bothered confirming a match really happened...do you need all 6 for example or just 1 other from the game?

Well, there are a few other things to it. Matches can only be submitted if all players have registered. And indeed, everyone has to confirm the match. I expected people to think of it as a drawback, but I think it won't be that much of a problem when a few people are registered. You eventually challenge people who are registered. And if you want a larger battle, you ask other people to join.

Even if it fails, it has been a great experience for me. I've learned some new PHP tricks, and this was the first time I actually scripted large JavaScript functions. And I designed the site without a WYSIWYG-editor, which I've also never done before. But it would be really cool to see it work out.

Woo!

Well, I've not exactly actively played Defcon recently, but this looks like it could be interesting. *joins*.

Two days after the release of the DEFCON ladder system, I've added a small feature in the forums. The profile page now also shows the score, wins/losses, and kills/deaths/survivors statistics. And while viewing a topic, user score/wins/losses are also shown per post. Check it out for yourself if you don't find this very understandable (which I'd expect).

Yes, and although I like the proposal, I say no. My system has been custom-made, so merging would mean it's my system on your domain. I'll just keep it as is.

Cheers for getting back to me jelco,

would have been happy to host on your server, it makes little difference where its hosted imho, just thought a really good front end + your system would make for a winning combination.

if you have second thoughts let me know.

Just tp say - I have signed up, and support this venture all the way..

Maybe we need a day or days when we play matches. Also an indication of time zones may help..?

Time zones are a good idea. I'll just implement the time zone you have to enter in phpBB. Expect it to be finished tomorrow.

Thanks for the suggestion!

With a new small addition, it is now possible to view the timezone in a person's profile. This makes it easier to set up matches (and probably tournaments) and will enable you to find buddies in the same time zone as you live in.

The time zones are shown as the difference in time to GMT. This function uses the time zone you enter when registering to phpBB. It is important that you update your settings when Daylight Saving Time is turned on or off, because that differs per region and cannot be set automatically by the board. If you view a profile, you can click on the time zone to display some information.

Coming up: The challenge function! This will enable you to challenge other people to matches, up to 6-player FFAs. The first major upgrade to be done to DEFCON42 is to be expected near the end of April.
