Nothing, the standalone version works fine, the problem is Steam.

Also the Steam version is 1.39.

I've tried Steam versions and standalone...

Postby Killerk » Wed Aug 30, 2006 11:19 pm

Hi, I've recently purchased the Steam version of Uplink and am experiencing exactly the same issues, even on first play of the game. System freezes with audio garble, then resets and Windows advises its recovered from a serious error.

Running XP Media Centre Edition 2005 (Fully updated)
AMD 3200+
1gig Geil
2xXFX 6800 GT's in SLi
Audigy 2 ZX

After exeriencing the issues I ensured all drivers in use are fully up to date.

Strange thing is that pretty much at same time my friend purchased Uplink but not on Steam. I borrowed his version and patched it to 1.31 and experienced the same problems???!!!

Is there a common factor you've managed to identify between those experiencing this problem? And can I supply anything from my system to aid in resolving it?

Much appreciated,

Kelv

Do we see a pattern here?

Really interresting because the graphic library changed between 1.31 and the current patches from GLUT to SDL.

And since the crash append in both version, it could really point to a sound problem.

perhaps someone with the BSOD should run Uplink with -sound_musicenabled (stop the music but not the sounds)

Also someone should try the following trick to see if it works :

freeze wrote:Hey, I don't know if this will help you - I had a problem where it was doing exactly the same thing, and I'm relating it more to the fact that I don't think my Creative drivers are working very well in Win XP Pro 64-bit. I am using an Audigy 2 ZS.

Anyway, by turning the MIDI music off I haven't had my PC restart on me at all. Whenever the music is on, Uplink will run anywhere from half an hour to 5-10 mins before it freezes and restarts my PC.

same problem

Postby begforme2 » Thu Aug 31, 2006 4:38 am

I just bought the game and I have the same problem. I can't even create a new account before the game crashes. I get the same BSOD message (BAD_POOL_ERROR ***STOP: 0x00000019 etc...). I'm not using a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Zs, I'm using a TurtleBeach Montego DDL.

edit
i used -sound_musicenabled and it seemed to work fine.

So I guess the MIDI are buggy on newer sound cards? (not really tested in the drivers since nobody really use them anymore)

I can happily report no issues on an X-Fi. So not all newer sound cards. Although, I don't have the steam version.

I am running an Aureon 7.1 and I was having crash issues. I disables the music and all is working perfectly now. Although I liked the music :(.

So the issue is sound related. Bonza.

I tried it and Uplink appears to work fine now. Been playing for the last 2 hours with no problems or resets. Could be the cause of some problems for Steam users.

same crash, same issue

Postby wenlong » Fri Sep 01, 2006 1:37 am

hey guys, i've been having the same issue as all of you guys. i also have an Audigy 2 ZS sound card and i'm having exactly the same problems with the midis from the game. i've updated all of my drivers and the problem still persists. i find this problem very distressing as the music, for me, is one of the best parts of Uplink.

if i disable the music, the game works, but it's not the same game without the music. i'm glad this topic is still active as i'd love to find a solution for it. Thanks to anyone working on this.

Hi, for those of you experiencing instability issues it might also be related to your OpenGL drivers.

As an experiment, please download this OpenGL32.DLL and place it in the same directory as Uplink.exe.

Please report back on whether that makes any difference.

Thanks

I still get the crash after downloading that OpenGL32.dll replacement. This is running 1.39/Steam, and I will shortly retest 1.4x (which I was running right up 'til I realised my save game had been corrupted by an earlier crash).

I also have an Audigy ZS. The crash seems to happen at about 20 minutes into the game, and of the ten or so crashes,at least two of them occured at the modem I deactivated a security system (monitor).

Ok there is a new Steam beta available, see Latest Uplink patch for Steam Users

This beta use a new sound library, would be great if people experiencing the crash could test it and report back.

Ive been having the same crashes. The STOP code is Machine_Check_Exception 0x0000009c(0x00000004,0x80545ff0,0xb2000000,0x00070f0f).

Turning off the music does appear to fix this problem, Ive been able to run it for hours and not have this error. Im running the Steam version of Uplink in Windows XP Pro, with an AUdigy 2 ZS sound card.
