Hacking movies

Postby hemlock » Sun Apr 23, 2006 4:18 am

Did anyone see that movie Firewall? what'd you think?

Some of the movies that involve some sort of computer hacking (that term is being used VERY liberally in some of these films) I can think of:

Sneakers
The Net
Hackers
The Matrix
Mission Impossible
Swordfish
Johnny Mnemonic
Lawnmower Man

add to the list! what is your favorite?

This has been done to death, but two more I can think of off the top of my head are:

Wargames
Antitrust

The Saint also has some hackerish elements to it.

AntiTrust is an awesome movie.

However, if you haven't seen both WarGames and The Matrix, well, you have no right to participate in this thread.

How about Ghost in the Shell? That's about hacking people's heads, making them do things to free an AI.

This might be a stretch, but Disney's Tron might count as well, since Flynn keeps trying to hack into a corporate system to prove he created the company's hit game.

BTW: I have seen Wargames and The Matrix and have them on DVD, so I'm OK. 8) I also have The Net 2.0. Haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but it sounds much like the original Net.

Unlike many topics that have been done to death, this one can generally generate some interesting conversation. So I wouldn't be too sorry you posted it. :)

I'm actually going back and checking out old topics to lose my n00b status ;)

Firewall is playing at the 2nd run theater here for $3 - I'll probably check it out and report back to you guys. I have a feeling it's not going to be that in depth, computer wise, but I bet it'll be entertaining.

I did when it was first released. Really didn't impress me, but there was one good thing about it.

(Go on take a guess...)

well i have seen just 2 hacker movies, Hackers and Takedown (you know, Kevin Mitnick). I must say, I like Takedown better, 'cause hacking is so unrealistic in Hackers and in Takedown, you can see a true life of a hacker on run.

I just rented Hackers yesterday and watched it for the first time. I loved it! Lots of fun, and I loved some of the tech-silliness! *Killer refresh rate!*

The movie was totally elite

According to a lot of people, Operation Takedown is quite loosely based on Kevin Mitnick's life.
I don't know what's true or not, but most people say a lot of things he does in the movie never happened.
