Help needed - Mechanical Engineering

Postby ReflectingGod » Fri Aug 27, 2004 4:13 am

Hey, any mechanical engineers round here?

I need some help with a project, I need some advice on designing a differential for a race car, which can be chain driven.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

What would be the problem with simply using the differential design used for shaft drives but instead of a ring gear use a sproket? I'm no engineer but that seems like it would work. :)

Yeah, it probably would, I'm just having trouble visualising it...

Best way is probably to play around and see what works...

They should have a good diagram of a differential at www.howstuffworks.com to help you visualize it. :)

Heh, yeah, I just thought of that....

The only problem then is I would need to encase and seal the whole chain inside a housing of some form, to keep the oil in....

You could use a shaft to drive the differential but then use a chain to drive it (ie make the shaft come out of the differential and then have a 90 degree joint so that another shaft comes off parallel to the axil which is driven by the chain and drives the shaft going into the differential). :)

Nah, the idea is we use a bike engine and gearbox, and run a chain straight from the gearbox to the diff, otherwise we need to fabricate a driveshaft and attach to the gearbox somehow....

Well you could just make the sprocket drive the outside of the differential casing (ie just make the differential housing rotate). That would allow you to use a standard differential design, use a chain, and still keep the oil contained. :)

Being smart means how effectivly you can learn, understand and comprehend things, whatever your source may be.

Yeah, but he always seems to, within a half-hour or so, have taught himself the entire subject to at least A-level (dunno what the US equivalent is... non-compulsory age 17/18 qualification) standard - that's not smart, that's superhuman :)

The only alternative being that he *did* already know a fair bit about the topic before the question was posted - this seemingly does not do anything to alleviate the superhuman status, as he is in this case able to accumulate and store quite a few lifetimes worth of info, and recall any of it at will.

The third possibility - he is one of those people that can remember his past live(s) after reincarnation
