Here are some general ideas. They just came up so I thought I'd post them here:

-  A blackmail storyline. When you're at the top, you can get one of the top 10 hackers to blackmail you. The only way out is to do what he asks or find a way to kill him.

-  Some rebel hackers are destroying the system. You can help them or prevent them from destroying the uplink system

ARC creates AI that threatens take over the internet, send nuke here, there and all over the world and you must find a way of protecting certain sites, develop viruses to slow down the AI and then go in and activate the self destruct sequence, only to find it's connected to a load of nukes as well, meaning you'll have hack loads of computers and send all of them in to space, threatening to punch a hole in the Ozone layer meaning that you have to delay the self destruct for 5 minutes, while the missiles get out of Earth's orbit, meaning they keep on going towards Saturn and destroy the red cloud there.

For a TC if someone is up to making it:
Recreation of the life of Kevin Mitnick, even though some may find that boring.
Or
A storyline where you're tracing the tracks of a giant chicken/fish type monster that has turned it's sights onto hacking.
Or
A series of short missions which recreate famous hacks.

Well okay here is my idea for plot, some ideas have been inspired by other hacking games and movies.


Intro:

it began in the year is 2025, 10 years after the outbreak of the revelations virus that nearly brought the information age to a close.  Since that time many hackers have left the world of illegal computer access and found lucrative and successful jobs rebuilding computer systems and creating advanced security systems to prevent such disaster from ever occurring again.  However a strong underground hacker following still persists and the once powerful Uplink corporation has found its monopoly waning as other rival agency have begun appearing through out the digital world.

It was at this time that Cappella Optical Technologies unveiled the Latus Chip.  An advanced two way relay system that operated through neurological impulses. The Latus Chip was attached to the back of a users neck and then connected to a specially designed terminal through a fiber optic cable.  Once activated it allowed the user to see and interact with digital world as easily as if it was the real world and perform tasks at the speed of thought.

It has been two years since then, and now the Latus Chip is the industry standard for the computer elite, and the new breed of hacker nicked name patch heads because of the tell tale mark on their neck.

However all is not right in the information world several well know hackers have gone missing in the last few weeks, vanishing without a trace, and deep with in the hacker inner circles there are whispers of strange things happing out in the wilds of the information world.

Our Story begins:

You are small time fixer, you deal in the purchase and sale of illegal goods and services, and you aim to provide whatever your cliental desire.  Until one day when a petty thief named Jarred comes calling with an offer you can't refuse.  

He has acquired a Latus System although he won't say how or where he came by it, it is clear that this a custom model, which he is very eager and nervous to unload.  Your eyes light up at the possibilities this will provide and knowing that this is likely your only chance to gain access to the UnderNet, you wipe out all but $5,000 of your savings to purchase the system.

Using your limited knowledge of computers you hook up the system, and attach the Latus Chip and then flip the on switch.
