Thank you.  Nice to see not *everyone* here has had a common-sense bypass operation.

I remember back in my school days (although the computers were just a *liiiitle* bit different back then) the password was "seahorses".  How did I know this?  The bloke they'd hired as a technician had a typing speed of about three words per minute - not exactly a challenge for shoulder-surfing. ;)

Whaat?!?  Just because I'm now a sysadmin I have to have had a squeaky-clean past?  I wasn't *always* whitehat, you know... ;)

Quote: from Darksun on 5:51 pm on Sep. 2, 2003[br]I found quite a few security holes on my school network, but I showed most of them to the head of IT (who was my IT teacher) and he fixed them. He didn't mind, but the IT techs always gave me dirty looks (probably because I knew more about the network than them )

i used to work for a japanese company at england and sometimes inform my boss what i found not good on our network and also got those dirty smug look from the IT department and when i got layed off i found out (some collegues informed me) why those IT staff were looking at me that way.

the reason was those eFFing IT blokes don't wanna be outstaged what a pathetic attitude that is. hope they all go to hell, ooops they are because the company just stopped its operation.

I work in the ICT Dept. for ALSTOM Transport. A couple of weeks ago they had a security issue in Paris, where some of the cleaners walked up to the Win2000 PCs and for fun started guessing passwords. In an attempt to stop this we had been told to remove the "Remember last logged in user" option. It was hell the next day when about 90 (no over-reaction) people kept phoneing us complaing that:

1. I can't log in (You mean I have to put my name in that box?!?)

2. My computer is broken because it doesn't keep my name anymore. (*Explaination*)

3. I put my name back in the box but I still can't log in. (AnthonyS runs down to see them and points out that they haven't spelt their name right *sigh*)

God, that was a LOOOOONG day :).

You know, I think people should be made to pass an intelligence test before being allowed near a computer...

just an idea AnthonyS why not modify the system policy on those w2k machine to lock after 3 or more attempts of failed loggins.
and
Darksun companies don't need those intelligent test they need a good surgeon to perform a brain transplant or some common sense chip implant, implanted on those dim employees.

my primary schools computers used RM CLassmate, the most pathetic of all RM software, you needed a password to get on a login to use the internet, but you could go on word and click "help on the web"! Also, the teachers were none too happy when I got managers access and set up a protected login with all acces to the system...
They've got a better system now, but I could still get to the command prompt and access the server from it.
At my school nw, the use RM Community Connect, which is pretty secure as the school has hired a qualified technition to do it all for them.
Although there was a problem when have of a computer room got access to a program which was used to set effort grades and reports and change password without the original...

The computers at my primary were also pathetic RMs - the teachers had no idea how to use them, I had to help them. They didn't even change the default passwords, so a quick look in the manual and I got admin access, not even the teachers knew how to get it :)

My school is ok for security the run quite restricive shells for student accounts, but the network never works and the internet is so slow no body bothers with it, i had the admin password for the student network, but they changed it when the it teacher came back, but he is too busy to admin the network so I have to get to know a completly new teacher, but hey i still have the password for the staff server
