I would like to go white, but grey I stay. I am trying to go 'straight', as it were, but CavemanSalute (I won't give his real name here) keeps on pulling me back . . .

Passwords are cracked by: social engineering and guessing. People who try to use bruteforce crackers are script-kiddies.
MD5 is probably the most secure password authentication algo. You lose part of the password with MD5 (read "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" by W. Richard Stevens).
Hacking is not destroying, breaking in, or any of that media-played bullshit. Hacking is simply learning about a specific subject. Also, being compelled to learn about a specific subject. (math hacker, English hacker, animal hacker)...
Crackers are the bad people. They are also called blackhats. They break into systems, so that they can brag to their friends about what they did. They will sometimes even say they did something, even though they did not do it in all actuality.
Phreakers mess with phone systems.
Uplink is NO WAY like real hacking.

Everyone is a "hacker". Everyone learns about subjects throughout their life. There's just always someone who knows more about it than you...
