My terrible Idea: YTMNcon.

Postby extremejon » Mon Oct 09, 2006 9:08 pm

...Yes, a mod based off Ytmnd culture.

I fully intend to make this, and if I don't then I will make it half-way and then remines about how I almost completed a Mod.

From what I've seen, modding of this game seems simplistic and easy.

So.

I have NO MODDING EXPERIENCE WHATSOEVER. But From what I've seen, you just draw some sprites, give them exact file names so the game recognizes what they are, rename stuff in the .txt, and zip it all up.

Wish me luck. Or curse my name. Whatever.

I've got almost all the Units and everything planned out Here's what I've got so far:

Nukes=Downvotes/One star

Citys=Names of fads.

Countrys=I'm not sure if you can do this, but I want to name countrys YTMND, PTKFGS, YESYES, HEH etc...

Subs=Sexymofo (Sunk= >_< Risen= ^_^)

Carriers=Katamari

Bombers=Happycat/NEDM

When Nukes go off I want to hear Lex Luthor going way in the backround "WROOOONG!"

When the vicorty Timer starts I wanna hear "PUNCH THE KEYS FOR GODS SAKE!"

When a missle launch is detected I wanna hear "LEEEEEROOOOOOOY JJJJEEENKINS!"

That Leroy Jenkins would get really old, really fast. I suggest saying "You're the Man Now, Dog" every time a nuke is launched. And use Gravity Cat for the bombers. I'm kinda working on and off on a 4chan/internet mod right now.

unrar 'sounds.dat', and tinkle around with 'data\sounds.txt'. It should be somewhat self-explanatory after a while.

If not, feel very free to ask in more detail :)

Ah-ha!

Cool things.

Although I imagen that uploading my own sounds and telling them when to play them will be pretty tricky. For now I shall just tighten up the Graffix.

So... From what I've seen from the sounds folder...I take the sound files (oggs?) and open them up in my audio editor (audacity) and do whatever to it...Save it under same filename so it will recognize what to use it for and replace old one...

But how do I re-zip the sound folder into a .dat and add it to the mod file exactly?

There's no reason to repack, for one simple reason ~
The game prioritizes individual, unpacked files higher than the files packed into main.dat and sounds.dat.

Basically this means that first, Defcon looks for 'data\sounds\blabla.ogg', and if it doesn't find such a file, it'll look in the 'sounds.dat' file. So the unpacked files are always used first.

Aha, I wouldn't have guessed that. Thanks.

So, I've started. And as a warmup and to get myself aquainted for how this works, I decided to start out with the simplest sprites.

For some reason, this amuses me endlessly.

EDIT: I tried drawing a Katamari by hand and it was a disaster. I got frusterated and tried traceing a picture of a Katamari. I cannot belive How perfect it turned out. It doesn't really look like it's floating in the water though. Aw well.

Haha, this made me laugh outloud - especially that screencap. Great job so far.
