Ahhh.. the trick when I had the demo (I actually bought the game and thankful for it) is to remain at novice forever -- just refuse missions, and you'll be downgraded... I managed something like 100,000 before getting bored.

Worked my way up to ALL the software and upgrades and an Alpha I-CPU if I remember correctly... was fun to make a game of it, and see how fast it took to build a user from dead scratch to the max in the demo.
And yeah.. want more play time? Abandon a couple missions to drop your rank safely so that you never reach Confident, and therefore never get blackscreened. One reason I used to check my standing after each mission payoff, and keep at least one spare mission at the back of the hopper at all times if I /did/ bip to Confident. It's connecting to another machine that triggers the kill.. so as long as you abandon that last spare mission before you try to connect anywhere, you get dumped a rank, and you're golden for more gameplay.

Which is good practice for your speed. Or you could try taking on your OWN missions, playing around and looking for the hidden stuff in the demo. Trying to break the Uplink servers (MUCH easier here, and with less reward), for example. Or playing around with the full-game corps listed on the groups here...

why stop there? the demo is good for making yourself faster, but personally, i prefer the full game, but only for 2 new gateways, and more missions. my fav 2 gateways: amcore fileserver, media r-access gateway
but otherwise, the game's the same.
p.s. in the demo, can you look in internic and find the global criminal database? if so, have some fun putting people in jail (can't get authorized arrest, type in as a crime, broken parole, and 2 other felonys).
