Saucers, tornados and Lasers

Postby Cooper » Fri Oct 06, 2006 4:20 pm

Oh my!

This has probably been brought up somewhere already, but when I extracted the graphics folder there were symbols for a Flying Saucer, a laser and a tornado. What are they all about?

Also, is there a modding FAQ somewhere?

The laser.bmp is the 'gunfire' used in-game.

The saucer and tornado might be triggered in some way or other, and there's even info about them in 'data\langauges\english.txt' ... but for now they're regarded as not in the game.

As for a modding FAQ ... well, it's not very structured as of yet, but if/when I get the time, I'll make separate guides for each aspect of modding. For now though, these should cover your basic needs.

Feel free to ask any specific or general questions you want :)

Thanks. I'm excited by the fact that I can make mods with conventional graphic design software for DEFCON. I've always fancied doing a spot of modding but the degree of technical knowledge required for other games has always gotten the better of my lethargy. Luckily, I have several years of university and work experience using potatochop and illustrator, so doing a few 2D graphic tweeks should be a breeze.

The saucer and tornado are triggered by the "WorldEvents" setting in the advanced server options. What's that you say? There is no WorldEvents option? Hrm... you might have to hack the data files... That being said, I am told that it is quite buggy, and will cause Defcon to crash. I wouldn't know, as I haven't experimented with it.

Mhm yer, you simply add the EnableWorldEvents entry, and enable it prior to a match. ( AI only. )

The game crashes randomly, so im guessing this is the ufo mechanics not working, and therefore having been removed.
"Surely you didn't mean to press that button just then did you?"
"No, nor will i disarm the nukes."
"Oh well, I will have my Fighters shoot them down."
"Sure you will."
"Oh NOES, ITS BEEN PATCHED!!!"

True.

But they add more modding possibilities, so... I want 'em :D

I mean nothing.

The tornado graphic was used as a stand-in for a proper COMMS icon.

There's evidence in english.txt that tornados and UFOs were actually 'units' of some kind in the game.
