FRACT (IGF finalist)

Postby Cooper42 » Wed Jan 12, 2011 2:02 am

Gonna give this a new thread. As, just, wow...

For anyone who loves the Darwinia aesthetics (neon polygon worlds!) and electronic music, this is an absolute must.

IGF Entry
Download (PC, 117MB Mac version on website.)
Trailer: http://www.vimeo.com/18548118

An adventure game that is reminiscent of Myst, but please don't let that put you off! Most of the puzzles are easy and rely primarily upon exploration in the beautiful visual and sound scapes.

No save function currently. Can be beaten though. I'm just having fun with the music sequencer in the second section...

Before I spend an hour downloading that monster file, how well is it going to run on my POS MacBook Air? I can't seem to find any min specs anywhere (though I freely admit that I am probably just not seeing them).

Since when is 100MB a monster file. :P

I guess I'll try it on my netbook.. That doesn't run Multiwinia.

Edit: Fail!
Turn on, tune in, drop out.

@xander the changelog refers several times to features that should "improve performance on slow computers" as well as "could still use some heavy optimizations for slower systems". Thats probably as close as you will get to system requirements for a beta release.

I would like to point out that while those screenshots look pretty, they do no justice to the game. That second screenshot especially. The animations of objects in the game are pretty damn lovely.

It uses the Unity engine. So, if you've had any experience running Unity games on your Mac, that might be an indication. But Unity games do seem to vary quite a bit in performance...

It isn't a question of storage space (at least, not in this context). It is a question of how long it takes to copy a file across the interwebs. I recognize that broadband changes the equation a bit, but most of the US isn't really that fast by first world standards. Until I can get better than 700 kb/s, 100 MB is a monster file.

Now, having download the file and tried it out: it runs very poorly, even at 640x480 at the lowest graphics setting. I really need a new machine. :(

Yes, that's true, in France 1Mo/s is quite rare too, even if it's becoming something common with cable and optic wires. (going easily above 1Mo/s)

But in comparison of other files, 100Mo is quite small. Depends how you look at it.

Sure, you could look at it in a "I could fit this on my HDD a good few thousand times" perspective, but "This takes quarter of an hour with my download speed maxed out" can't be readily ignored.

Having grown taking that long to do download a couple mb, as well as nowadays making downloads that take several hours regularly, I find anything that takes 15 minutes to be a small download :P

Mo and To? Silly French notation. Megabytes (MB), megabits (Mb), mebibytes (MiB), and terabytes (TB) all the way. :P

Not so silly actually, there's a difference between a byte and a bit. So i'm standing up for "octet" ! (even the name is a clue to it's nature :P )
