Frozen Synapse IV Tourney: Round Three [Last]

Postby Ace Rimmer » Tue Jul 06, 2010 8:10 pm

There may not be enough people here to attempt this, but I thought I'd try anyway... an IV Frozen Synapse Ladder/Tourney/Competition.

Anybody up for this? The game is still in beta but I've found it to be very fun when you have nothing else to do, especially because you can go back to a game and complete your turn days later. Getting games played shouldn't be a problem because of this as it doesn't matter if both people are online at the same time.

Players:

Jordy... [YouGo game name]
Cooper42 [Cooper game name]
Ace Rimmer [Ace_Rimmer game name]

So here is probably the full list of players:

Jordy... [YouGo]
Feud
ynbniar
martin [martindevans]
Cooper42 [Cooper]
Ace Rimmer

Any thoughts on how to set this up? I read the two tourney threads on the FS forum. Neither of them finished? Anyway, my thoughts were:

Round 1: Light Extermination (watch your opponents games) Everybody plays everybody else = 15 games
Round 2: Light Extermination: Top Four advance, everybody plays everybody else = 6 games
Round 3: Dark Extermination: Top Three advance, everybody plays everybody else = 3 games

Round 3 determines 1st, 2nd, 3rd. That's 24 games. Three maps, one for each round, everybody plays the same map each round (i.e., round 1, map 1; round 2, map 2, round 3, map 3)

Good, bad, ugly?

Of course, there will be shiny stats and everything.

That's rather big, but I would be up for it.
The other tourneys didn't finish.

They used a pre-determined map which was played by each player from both sides against different opponents.
I like the idea of pre-determined maps, but it is somewhat bothersome. (to do)

Other then that, I would like to play hostage games, cause I think they're the most fun, and there is a nice tendency to win a game with a daring escape.

It seems big, but if you go all the way to Round 3, you only play 10 games total. That's not much considering you can Load/Play whenever you have time.

[Round 1 = 5 games, Round 2 = 3 games, Round 3 = 2 games]

Hostage would probably be good for Round 3, but I'd want each person to play the rescue squad, so that would add 3 extra games. It's just one extra game for each person, so still very manageable.

I don't mind making the maps, I'll have time tomorrow, but I tried the map editor a couple of times and it seems very cumbersome. I've looked at the FirstRoundMap created for the FS tournament and it looks like a good one for our Round 1 (why re-invent the wheel).

So, how about Light Ext. Round 1, Dark Ext Round 2, Hostage-Swap Round 3? This way you get to review your opponents tactics, abilities, ect before moving on to round 2 where you might need that info to get the upper-hand (in-game anyway as you can look at finished Dark games), then move onto something a bit harder (hostage).

Sounds great. Altho I don't really like the first tourney map, cause it's kind of defensive, and it's not symmatrical.
You could just generate random (symatrical) maps until you see one you fancy.

Personally I prefer dark to light, so some more dark early on would be nice, perhaps the last two rounds could be dark?

Regarding hostage mode, I've never played it, so obviously I'd prefer not to do that :P

I don't have a problem going with Dark for Round 1 and Light for Round 2 if nobody else does.

Ok for Round 1 Dark? It's kind of barren as walls go, but that will just make it necessary to duck more. :P Also, I figured 8 or more turns.
