whats a .RAR file?

What is this, and why cant my computer open it?
I downloaded chris' new game xiotex.
i double clicked on the file, and windows said it did not know what program to open it with.
help?

It's an archive file similar to a .zip file. I would strongly recommend downloading and installing this, as it is compatible with tons of different archive types, including its own .7z file type.
