Slaves to Armok: God of Blood - Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress

Postby wwarnick » Wed Nov 14, 2007 7:12 am

Has anyone played Slaves to Armok: God of Blood - Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress? The concept is really cool, though I'm afraid the learning curve will be too steep for me. I want to get some input before I spend any time trying to figure it out.

No, but it seems that we finally have a competitor with "Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie" for longest video game title.

Looks like there is lots of micromanagement. Get it? Dwarves - MICROmanagement. Hahahaha hm.... heh.

Since there is no Linux version, no, I never tried it or even heard of it.

It's big over at TIGSource - I gather it's worth persevering with. Beyond that, I can't say much.

Conventionally, it's known simply as "Dwarf Fortress" :P

It's bloody awesome. The learning curve is initially fairly steep, but it's a lot of good fun making a fortress. Certainly worth perservering with! (imho)

For bert: it works pretty well in Wine ;)

A friend from Uni got me into it during the summer holidays. I once tried playing with one Miner, six peasants, minimal equipment, and 50+ dogs. As a true testament to my competence, I did a lot better than usual.

With versions v0.27.169.32a+, I'm once again wondering what the hell I'm supposed to do. Not that I've spent much time trying to work it out.

I'll second that. It's not like riding a bike - it's very easy to forget how to play it :(

'The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth II - The Rise of the Witch King' would probably have to take that title.

Expansion packs and episodes are cheating, whatever IGN says.

I don't actually know how to ride a bike. Seriously.

Back on topic, I tried the game last night and had a heck of a time figuring things out. It took me fifteen minutes to finally figure out enough to make a short tunnel in a mountain. Once I got that far, I didn't know what to do next, so I gave up for the night. The only city-builders I've played are SIMCity and SIMCity 2000 (and was terrible at both), so I'm going to have a heck of a time getting the hang of it. But perseverance is everything.
