flash button

i currently trying to make a flash animation and i want to make a play button but i can it says

**Error** Scene=Scene 1, layer=Layer 1, frame=1:Line 2: Mouse events are permitted only for button instances

Total ActionScript Errors: 1 Reported Errors: 1
when i test the movie the action script is on the timeline the script is

stop();

on(release) {
play( );
};
any idea please explain it i a very simple way

It looks like the mouse event is attached to the frame rather than the button. Delete the mouse event and then click on the button to select it and then add the event again and see if it works.
