Interesting article on Vista games on Eurogamer at the moment.

But Microsoft also aims to get the Minesweeper crowd more involved by expanding its Microsoft Casual Games range. "Right now Microsoft casual games reach 120 million people every month, and by 2008 the annual revenue for casual games is expected to reach $1.5 billion. To meet this rapidly rising demand, Microsoft Casual Games will roll out eight Windows Vista-optimized titles in 2007 on the MSN Games website, including Luxor 2, Bliss Island, Crystal Quest, Spinword, Jewel Quest 2, 7 Wonders of the Ancient World, Darwinia, and the runaway Xbox Live Arcade hit Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved," Moore reveals.

Not exactly... they'll be on the MSN games website. Still fairly close.
I'd like to hear what IV has to say.

Look closer, they state they're making the games available in an attempt to reach $1.5 billion in revenue due to casual games.

Which quite logically means they want some money for it,
otherwise there wouldn't be any profit for them, right?

Good point.

Microsoft Casual Games will roll out eight Windows Vista-optimized titles in 2007 on the MSN Games website, including Darwinia.

This explains why the renderer has been re-written for DirectX. Other than Live Arcade, of course! ;)

Strange things going on with the changing of the renderer.
To state an example, doom 3 runs on open-GL.
So why shouldn't darwinia be able to, for some pixelshaders?
To be really honest, if you'd ask me, IV is being not so indie atm by bending over to the microsoft monopoly.

Is that a bad thing?
Well, Darwinia will loose the support for Mac and Linux.
BUT, the biggest userbase comes from the windows based players.
So when it comes down to a very important aspect of creating a game, money, this is a 'good' thing...

Now IV will have more money to make some more games for us. (Since Microsoft will pay IV for changing to DirX... OR publish the game, so that IV will earn more $)

And what I've heard is that Ambrosia, who is in charge of the Mac version, wasn't that fast/good in porting the game to the Mac platform.
So what is lost?
Maybe someone else has a very different opinion on that, I'd like to know.

But the main question remains, when will the update/patch be released?

Yes, but then Darwinia wouldn't be a "Game for Windows," and would have no chance of running on on the XBox. Both of those open up possible revenue streams for IV. Why shouldn't they take those opportunities, if offered?

Do you really believe that IV are giving up Mac and Linux support for Darwinia? Do you really believe that it is impossible for them to backport all of the changes in the DirectX version to the Mac and Linux versions? I would be very surprised if IV dropped Mac and Linux support for Darwinia.

IV and ASW worked on / are working on the Mac port together. John, from IV, is in charge of the project. It took time because there were unforeseen floating point issues, not because ASW sucks.

The Vista version already has been released.

So, anything about the patch version for Vista?

SHODAN, System Shock
best game ever out of Darwinia :)
