The world is going to end.

The place to hang out and talk about totally anything general.

Apparently these guys are trying to re-create the Big Bang (on a smaller scale).
They're hoping to create little Black Holes or find other dimensions as well.
They estimate the possibility of accidentally destroying the planet as extremely low.

:?

Cool. Hopefully they don't blow up the world before Defcon comes out :)

* The risk is calculated at about 10 to the minus 40 - a 1 in 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 chance.

that's alot of zeroes.
personally, even though the risk of destroying the planet is very small, I'm not so happy about it. If the planet would be destroyed, then how are they gonna explain it? If there would be anyone left, to explain it to. And what would happen to the universe, if Earth disappeared? Damn, that thing raises way too many questions for my tiny head.

well, as long as they don't take Mars with them, then it's alright.

I would love to see the faces of the scientists, just as they realize that they just have brought about the end of all being. Now that would be funny

Although I do hope they don't. No better place to buy good beer than good old czech republic on the earth.

Their work is genuinely interesting and exciting stuff. I wish that I could be there for its opening (though I was under the impression that the LHC wasn't going to start operations until 2008)
The chance of "destroying the planet" is so ludicrously low that they really needn't mention it.

That post you can't think of was referencing the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. :P
