PC Format write about our visit

Postby Chris » Sun Aug 20, 2006 7:41 pm

Introversion Software visited Future Publishing recently, and delivered (almost) finished code for review. They've written a brief blog about their experience.

So the rumours of a Steam release are true (and hands up those who expected that? ;) )

Plus, is that a supersized manual that Mark is holding there?! I've heard of large print, but that takes the buiscuit!

It's said that Defcon really deserves a good community. I think we can be. And the probability of me infecting others with "Defcon" is growing afer every new report...

Whoever has the the highest score (a million dead means one point) when the timer runs out wins.

I thought the one with the lowest losses wins?

cheers,

Right.

Everything about the game is... "Nobody wins, but he who loses the least, loses the least" and "Maybe, just maybe, you can lose the least", etc, etc.

Which made me believe that the way to 'win' Defcon was to have the FEWEST deaths within your own borders, not score the most kills.

Now kills are the score? What gives?

Its safe to assume that it works both ways i.e. kill a million people and you gain 1 point, however, lose a million people and lose 1 point.

Remember, a short preview/review is not going to explicitly state the entirity of the scoring scheme so don't expect that to be the only way to score or lose points.

There are several score methods in Defcon.

The default score method awards 2 points for an enemy kill, and subtracts 1 point for every one of your own casualties. This gives the most balanced game.

One score method is called Survivor - it simply awards 1 point for every survivor. You all start on 100 points (100M people) and your scores all go down as the game plays.

There are others, but you'll have to wait to see how they work :)

Whew.

Now, where's that pre-order? Darwinia was available 45 days prior, and it's definitely less than that till the end of September. :P
