I had heard about that but had not had a chance to watch them yet. I rectified that last night and would agree, they actually did a decent job, especially considering the giant time difference. The only flaw I could see was Chris Barrie's hair (age showing). Otherwise, kept the same characters, same actors, same character history, same theme song, just updated the ship interiror.
One minor nitpick; they change the screensaver showing on all the monitors.
The second episode was pure Red Dwarf (effects of a [previous] time paradox).
