Modding DEFCON?

Postby Kuth » Sun Sep 10, 2006 6:21 am

It's probably a little presumptious of me to ask, but until we have something playable...

Darwinia and Hacker seem to have a lot of room for modding, but could anything be done with Defcon? New maps, other units... whole other scenarios? What could the possibilities be?

Hacker? Uplink you mean?

The only people who now the answer to your question are the beta testers, and they are bound by the NDA.

The American version of Uplink was "Uplink: Hacker Elite", so Hacker is another name for Uplink, yes :)

The only reasonable thing I can think of is using other maps.

Depends on how the game is structured though... I mean from looking at it there's obviously land and sea zones to descriminate what units can go where and so on. Is the background glow something rendered for the map or is it periminent?

I can imagine a system setting up continents by mapping out points to define the land boundaries- not unlike using the pen tool in, say, adobe illustrator. The computer recognizes this zone as land and all is well and good- again unless the map is hard-coded into the game.

The abstract nature of DEFCON seems to point nukes as the 'general' WMD- be it bio or chemical the target (and the population) is still dead anyway- Nukes are the quickest and most iconical of this kind of thing. Subs are done, Aircraft and battleships are done, as well as Missile defenses...

One addition could be Star Wars, but that might defeat the purpose of the whole game.

And yes I meant Uplink. I own Darwinia but not the other IV game.

Yeah, they could be used to clear minefields or as a backup for the missiles' autopilot

Re-reading the NDA, if you signed it, you just broke it :P

On the subject of mods it isn't much of a stretch to imagine things like custom maps, altered weapons, extra large maps that reflect the real scale of a global conflict, that sort of thing.

It may not be hard to imagine but the chances of it happening are slim.

Being primarily an online game, if you aren't running the "standard" package then you are limited in opponents - so whilst the MonkeyOnTheMoonCoN mod might be a great idea for a Lan party, as Monty says, such things won't be as prolific as previous Introversion games.

a realism mod would be fun
while a flat world, the weapon systems could probably be simulated more thoroughly

global fallout patterns for the next few months after the showdown? :)

a "war of the worlds" mod..
with player playing one of many countries
extremely powerful alien ships and weapons start appearing (think independence day)
only through cooperation with other countries could victory be gained
