BUG Metal Detector rarely detects my metal

I have successfully walked right through the metal detector on many, many occasions with lots of metal on my person and the detector would fail to go off. Two pairs of Scissors, or Hand Saws, to name a couple examples.

I noticed a pattern though. I pick up the item and immediately "put it away" by clicking the appropriate number key so I'm not wielding it like a weapon.
Every time I've successfully brought an item through the metal detectors without it going off, I'm unable to stash the item anywhere - even though there is room.
At this point, I am, however, able to walk around wherever I want without being detected - no matter how many metal detectors I walk through, and it becomes trivial to dig my way out.
