Defcon is a game, not a simulation. A flat world is part of the game. Though I would note that the Defcon map is not flat -- it is a cylinder. Also, everyone knows that Defcon 2 would suck, because you can only launch nukes at Defcon 1. That, and IV don't do sequels.

Just out of curiosity xander, since you've been here much longer then I and probably know more about the subject then I do, is that a stated company policy, or is it a de facto result of them having so few titles produced so far?

A bit of both, actually. It is a bit of a running joke, but it is also in line with comments that Chris has made. To quote the Manifesto:
It takes two years to write a game, and in most cases about 10% of that time is spent on game design, usually at the start and end. This is the wrong way around, since the game engines are fundamentally all the same and the games themselves are what is supposed to be different. The fact that every games company under the sun has written their own particle engine, or their own skeletal animation system, or their own physics library is symptomatic of the problem. THEY ALL DO THE SAME THING. They also all cost a fortune and take months to implement.
I read that to mean that creating different games -- original and unique games -- is more important than rehashing old territory.

Defcon 2 is just the same as Defcon 3. You'd still need to wait for Defcon 1 before you can nuke

The Uplink bonus disk? Also, Chris ruled out making Uplink 2 (at the Darwinia launch party?) and one presumes that's the case for subsequent games. Except Multiwinia. But we all know that isn't really a sequel.

Some people talk because they have something to say. Others talk because they have to say something.
