I totally understand where phishy is coming from.
I develop a game myself--and therefore run a forum--we always get the same questions and complaints-- but the way you folks treat newbies _here_ is a disgrace, really.
You need to be polite and post a link to where it's covered and thank the new poster for the idea--that's the way the professionals do it, and that's the way I do it.
I always have trouble getting more than 1 or 2 player DEFCON games, and I suspect it could be the way you treat new folks around here...

You're 100% right of course and on my behalf i apologise
Of course this in no way excuses any negative behaviour from defcon forum members but it does nulify his right to complain on this matter, as well as yours.
'I don't know if it's been mentioned before, it didn't come up in my search, but I think it would be interesting to see a MIRV thrown into the defcon mix.'
'It could drastically change some gameplay aspects, which I guess makes it a really bad idea.'
'Feel free to trash my idea.'
Quite a few new members to the forums tend to make their first post announcing their presence (not that this is mandatory), which if you read them, then you will know they are always warmly welcomed and jokingly warned that at some time on their forum presence they will be flamed, attacked, mocked etc etc, this is the internet...it was just unlucky of phishy to make one of his first posts on a sore subject (see...he already has a shortened nickname 'phishy'

IMHO that isn't the bible or should be to anyone. We all have to go through the "initiation process", but I have witnessed behaviour by "senior" members of this forum that made me want to puke. Some incidents I was in the middle and countless other flame wars were fuelled by the fact that some members here have established a connection or friendship if you like. I know of a couple of cases where the "flamed" one was completely right and he lost simply because the "oldies" ganged up on him. It's quite understandable that friends back each other up, but it doesn't make it right.
No matter what the freshman says (even though logic gives him the victory) the oldies seem to "win", or at least they believe they have. Seniors can get away with saying pretty much anything to people with smaller post counts and if the newbies had said the exact same things I can assure you they would be banned. All I'm suggesting is that being polite should come as natural as it would in the real world. I'm tired of the internet being a free zone for ass-like behaviour - regardless of rank. If you're a "compatible", humble individual in the real world, why put on another mask here?
I think we all agree that if you behave like an idiot *coughMVPEcough*, you get what you deserve, but why should "seniority" give you a free pass to say and do whatever you feel like?
Be nice, that's all I'm saying.

I think a large part of the problem is that everyone jumped on him, which was completely unnecessary. However, his must have been a very half-hearted search indeed if he failed to see the 3 threads titled 'MIRV' in the first page of results.
As a rule of thumb, I try to be civil and explain why what someone has said is undesirable, but I can understand people being pissed off and not in the mood for diplomacy when someone obviously has gone to no effort at all. Still, best not to scare people off.

my comment was more of a general note. I'm sure it won't change much, but at least I tried.

Well, you're never going to bring down 'the system'. Uncomfortable though the opinions laid out in 'Welcome to the Internet' may be, that's generally just the way group dynamics work. People shouldn't assume that they should act that way because of it, though, the way Social Darwinists did with evolution. But you should keep it in mind and 'agree to disagree' if you've got the short end of the stick as a result of it.

Yeah, I know. But sometimes the forum dynamics gets too retarded. People who obviously are scholars of many sorts suddenly behaving like 9 year old bullies beating up on the fat kid with braces in the alley. It's just too dumb. It would be so freakin' awesome to hear a senior member say "I'm sorry, I was wrong. I appologise for my attitude" ONCE. But I am aware that the chances of anyone finding a chest filled with gold at the end of the rainbow are infinitely higher. Would be nice though (either of them
).

Unfortunately, phishy, this is a community, and they develop in-jokes and an intolerance to heavily discussed subjects. Just be glad that you didn't suggest ground units. And this forum is a hell of a lot more tolerant than most forums, although certain forum members can be pedantic at times, including myself. The admins tend to be quite nice, with no fascistic deleting of threads because of their vague controversy or non-adherence to rules that the new person couldn't be bothered to read. Welcome to the forum.

That's because there are no mods. ;) Only NeoThermic and John, the admins.
