Just out of curiousity, wouldn't it be faster to just dump the floppy to the HD first and delete it after if you needed to? I mean, what possible reason would you really have to run directly from a floppy?

You lack any form of write permissions on anything bar a floppy disk? That can happen in many setups.

Heh, well if I were ever that desperate to play, I'd try working around that before running from a floppy, but I jumped through more hoops than that to hide Wolf3D on the machines in high school, so I suppose whatever's clever.

Ugh. Incidentally, when you get to University level, such attempts are illegal and the University has every right to call the police on you. Ergo if you choose between a slow loading time from a floppy and breaking the law, I know exactly which one I'd choose!

My high school did the same thing to me 15 years ago, so I believe you.

I agree.

Granted, they might not catch you, but you have to weigh the risk vs. gain.

Risk: Legal prosecution, loss of tuition, expulsion from school, lack of future education options, additional monetary losses (wasted rent, etc.).

Gain: Play a video game.

My school seems to take the approach (more de facto then de jure) that so long as you are running from your own memory source (floppy, stick, portable hard drive, whatever), you aren't breaking the normal standards (gambling, porn, etc.), and you aren't keeping students who need it for real work from having access then you can do what you want. But woe be unto those who tamper with the system.
