Friends list?
I searched through the forum and found nothing suggesting a friends list... I think it would be nice to be able to make friends and continue to play with/against them. But maybe I'm the only one that cares who I shoot nukes at...
Actually, it has been suggested before (and search for "friend list" in the think tank sub-forum gave me at least one thread with that title in the first page and several more where it is discussed at some point)
I don't think there are many people against it, it just never got implemented. Many people just learned ways around it, although I admit it would be nice.

There are enough people that understand/use IRC around here I'd say.
I personally 'used' IRC for 6+ years, ran one of the largest belgian channels on IRCnet and more. I practically spent my entire life from 13 to 19 on there but nowadays I can't be bothered about IRC anymore. My focus just shifted too much for that.

If you have steam, there is a defcon group you can join. You can set up a voice chatroom before the game if you want to talk to your allies and enemies as you nuke them.

Voice in on friends list. Add "enemies" or "foes", too. I went through a very frustrating and dull game with 5 "4 year-olds" who spent 10 minutes bitching about the speed of the game before ending the game on a whim. Time wasted.
Then I found a game with "Jason", and that was a blast. He'd be on my "friends" list.

Play on dedcons, it's worth it to avoid that kind of crap.

They don't hang around dedcons, or is there an anti-stupidity filter somewhere?

Well they certainly can't stop the server halfway through, and /ignore works charms on idiots.
